Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Have had a problem with ODS and everything that goes with it. My stool was always normal as in not hard or not too soft. But the last few weeks I have had a change in bowel movements. When I can eventually pass stool the first bit is always small pellet like and hardish (about 3-6 small bits) and then after 5-10 mins I will pass very soft sticky stool. I have to say that mostly I have to digitally remove stool whether it is hard or soft.

Just wondering why the stool has suddenly changed to being very soft and sticky. I have had no change in medications or diet.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

You should check with your doctor for any change in bowel habits; it could be just constipation, which might be helped by adding fiber to the diet, but your doctor should first rule out anything serious.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

I agree with refous If it continues get it checked out.
When my Bowel Movements changed a Colonoscopy
showed I had DIVERTICULITIS. Drs always recommend
any BM change should be investigated.
Good Luck, Solofelix.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hi, Im in a similar situation as you in regards to the hard stool with dry bits at the beggining ending with soft sticky stool which leads to an incomplete evacuation for me.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Just wondering cheeselephant - have you had any diagnosis or how do you deal with it.

Would this be a typical symptom of IBS?

My doctor has suggested that it is caused by incomplete evacuation. When I dont complete empty after a bowel movement, the last few bits of stool are left either in the rectum or bottom of the colon and it will just sit there (in my case for maybe a week). It becomes hard as it is not absorbing water at that stage and then everything backs up above it and nothing can pass through it.

Just wondering if anyone agrees with this and has anyone found a solution to incomplete evacuation.

Hi, I have not been diagnosed with anything currently and I'm Still having trouble dealing with it.

Everytime I have to have a BM it's the same thing. Hard bits of stool followed by soft stool with the feeling of not fully going and after I can feel bubbling on the lower left side of my abdomen. I don't believe I am constipated as I go quite regularly but it sounds like you are. Do you have diarrhea and how long have have you been dealing with this? thanks.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hey Paul, i still haven't resolved my issue but im almost certain now that it's a problem with my rectum being very irritable. the only solution i've come up with is a warm water enema. That seems to be the best solution i have right now but even that isn't reliable. I'm looking to try out this align probiotic if i can see any around. have you went to see your doctor about a diagnosis or what you should do to try and get better?

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hey Paul, you should really go see a doctor i mean i've been feeling pretty terrible for a while now and i have basically become tollerant to warm water enemas. I don't know what else I can do besides try different products such as Align and Metmucil etc. I'm looking into find a rectal colon specialist nearby hopefully i can find one and see what's really happening.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hey I went to see a doctor last week it was so awkward and found it hard to open up to him, he examed my back pasage and didn't find anything out of the ordinary which really got me down because I was hoping he'd reconize the problem straight away, I'm now use supplements to help me go but it's kind of hit and miss so far I don't really now if theyre working

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hey Paul, I've been ok as of late. Some days I feel great, others I'm feeling pretty terrible but that's a big improvement from everyday discomfort. I don't really know what I've been doing that is causing me to have some good days but for whatever reason I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing. I still have not found any of the Align product in my local stores but I have been taking another kind of probiotic. I'm going to give it sometime, as of right now I don't know if it's working or not but only time will tell.

Re: Hard stool followed by soft stool !!

Hey Paul, you should definetly try to see a gastroenterologist or a colon/rectal specialist and keep us updated here on how you're doing, thanks.
