bleeding, unconcerned doc, fissures?

So I'm posting here to get opinions/ similar experience as I'm feeling kind of lost with this...

6 months ago I took a round of antibiotics that gave me days of diarrhea, and subsequently, 2 anal fissures (wonderful!!) Doc examined and saw them, gave me hydrocortizone. Since then, the bleeding (streaks on stool) has gone and come back twice or 3 times, even though I've been drinking tonnes of water, eating pretty healthy lots of fruit etc, and lubing before bowel movements with something like aloe vera. I take magnesium, vitamin b, do sitz baths. I refuse to take softeners/laxatives because I am already extremely regular and I am also very thin and don't want to loose more weight. I also have some external hemorrhoids I think, bumps on the outside, itchy sometimes. If I have a largish or hard bowel movement it is painful, but not unmanageable, it's not the pain that I mind but the blood because it gives me anxiety every single time I see it (which is alot).
I saw my (new) doc and she basically said "that sucks, just keep doing what you're doing and watch it.. come back in a few months if its worse.." but doesn't think it's worth examining or testing for anything. I'm 24. Anyway, I'm trying not to worry about it, but for the past couple days the blood is scary amounts. Even a few small clots, and dripping. I've also noticed it tends to be worse near my period, which I just started. Anyway, I spend way too much time stressing and wondering if there's anything else I should be doing....

Re: bleeding, unconcerned doc, fissures?

It sounds like you need to see a good Colon/Rectal Specialist to find out if you have an anal fissure or hemmorhoids. And your doctor should have given you a rectal exam to rule out anything more serious since you are having rectal bleeding!

An Anal Fissure causes excruciating pain during a bowel movement and sometimes for hours afterward!! If you do have an anal fissure, you can sometimes treat it with sitz baths and prescription creams, Niphediphine worked for me and avoid straining at all costs! My doctor recommended not to use hydrocortisone creams for any length of time as it thins the skin in that sensitive area. There is also a surgery(LIS) if the fissure has become chronic and cannot be healed. An external hemmorhoid is painful, but not nearly as painful as the fissure(I have had both!) You mention fiber, my Colon/Rectal Specialist recommended a fiber supplement because you need both soluable and insoluable fiber to ensure bowel health, such as Citrucel or Metamucil, even if you think you eat a proper amount of fiber, it is hard to get the recommended 25-35 grams daily, along with 64 oz water.

Good luck and please consider seeing a specialist, as most PCP's aren't as familiar with fissures and hemmorhoids.

Re: bleeding, unconcerned doc, fissures?

hi - finally someone who is experiencing the same problem as I am. Mine started when I had my gall bladder removed, if I ate anything that was fatty such as sour cream, cream, chocolate etc. my stools were almost like poison to my system cuz my stool would actually burn my rectum. This has been going on now for about 10 years but is now at the point I dont even want to have a bm becuz it hurts too much... Yes I take many many sitz baths as that seems to be the only thing that helps after a bowel movement but I can tell you tha'ts not always convenient when Im at work. I drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber and try very hard to stay away from fatty foods, but its getting to the point that the pain is so horrid I just want to cry each time. I have saw a specialist and he was going to put a band on what they think is hemorroids but I had a heart attack in Sept so they wont do it becuz Im on blood thinners. I really believe this is not hemorroids but an internal fissure and will not heal. Ive tried everything from suppositores from the doctor to cream from a health food store. even to putting baby orajel to take away the pain. Im going to make another doctor appt and bring up these issues that I have read that other people are having same issues as me and have had the surgery with success.
