Severe pain while having bowel movement

Hello, I have been having very severe pain while having bowel movements, it has gotten progressively worse in the last few months. I'm going to have a sigmoidoscopy next week and the doctor said he would band any hemorrhoids if he found them, but I'm very worried the pain will be much greater than it is now after I've had them banded. I'm only 17 and it stinks that I have this problem and there's nothing I can do about it It's the worst pain I've ever felt before. The doctors didn't even know what it was, they didn't really see any anal fissure (but I assume they're going to have a better look during the sigmoidoscopy). I'm mostly worried about the pain after (if they find hemorrhoids and band them) because of all the horrible experiences I have read about people having on here and I don't want that to happen to me because the pain is so horrible. If you have any reccomendations please let me know.

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

Hi there!

I was in your position about 3 or 4 months ago. Please please please make sure your doctor is a colo-rectal specialist so you get a correct diagnosis. Mine turned out to be an anal fissure even though a string of professionals thought it was a hemorrhoid issue. I had a surgery a week ago although not everyone with a fissure undergoes surgery. While your issue still may be hemorrhoids, you need a good diagnosis so you can plan to take care of it. Treating the wrong thing will make everything more frustrating for you. Also, if it is too painful, make sure your doctor understands this so he or she is gentle. My first successful scope exam was done with a pediatric scope to minimize the pain.

I am hoping I can make you feel better. Most people that post, including myself will post about the extreme cases or really awesome cases. It seems more will post about problems and by the time we do research we get a lot of scary things that happened to other people. Everyone is different and reacts differently to treatment. You have age on your side so you may have a super fast healing time. I know it can be frightening, heck terrifying but once they figure out what is going on, you will be better off. Also, take comfort in knowing that they won't leave you in pain. You will have pain management and in your case, you may not feel a thing. I hope this helps just a little!

Good luck at your doctor's appointment, I hope everything works out. Make sure to post once you find out more about the issue as it helps others with the same issues.

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

Just wanted to say first thank you so much!! Yes the doctor I am seeing is a colo-rectal specialist. I am getting the sigmoidoscopy done on monday, and I will be completely under with general anesthesia so I won't feel anything. He didn't really look around that much down there because I was so much in pain at the time, so he said he's going to instead during the sigmoidoscopy so I won't feel anything (he'll look for fissures and other things). You're right though, because I'm so young I'll probably heal fast. You're also right about me feeling a lot better after they know what's wrong, that's definitely true because the pain I'm in now I would gladly stop for anything. Thank you sooo much again!!!

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

Great! I am so glad you are seeing a colo-rectal specialist and it sounds like you're on the right track!! I too needed general anesthesia for a complete exam and that is when my fissure was found. It was my first time receiving general anesthesia so I was nervous. I don't know if you have ever had general anesthesia but you will not feel a thing.. When I woke up from my surgery, it seemed as though only a couple minutes had passed. Keep me posted!

I will keep you in my thoughts and wish the best for you!

You're much too young to be having hemorrhoids and possible anal fissure problems. These problems are usually caused by excessively straining and forcing out hard dry stool from being constipated all the time. Do yourself a big favor by eating a high fiber diet 20-30 grams a day and drinking 64 oz. a day of water, get 30 minutes a day of exercise, and having a regular scheduled time each day to sit on the toilet to move your bowels. You will be much healthier in the long run. I wish I had learned this when I was your age and could have saved myself a lot of pain and misery all these years.

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

So I got my sigmoidoscopy done and the colorectal specialist didn't say much other than he banded the hemorrhoids that were there. I still am having a lot of pain during my bowel movements though I've had general anesthesia twice before, once for my endoscopy and then another time having my wisdom teeth removed so I knew what to expect DailyHope but I was still nervous all the same! I don't know why I'm still having pain, I think I might have an anal fissure but at this point I really have no idea anymore. I did great with a diet of no dairy and just soft foods (applesauce, fruit, vegetables) only when I was waiting to have my sigmoidoscopy, which made the stools softer (not diarrhea soft, but softer) which is what I will have to do for forever now I guess I really don't know now because my doctor said I didn't have an anal fissure.

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

My dad started having hemorrhoids when he was 18, so it's not impossible and that could have been part of the problem. But yes I was straining excessively and eating too much (even though I'm only 130 pounds...). I did neglect my water intake though which is something I have been working on tremendously lately. Also the exercise part. Although I was getting enough fiber before. Thank you for the advice though, and yes you're right I will make sure now I am healthier so I will be when I'm older too!

Re: Severe pain while having bowel movement

Hi Tulip,

Thanks for the update! When I was going through this pain, the two most common suspects for the pain were problematic hemorrhoids and anal fissures because both can cause excruciating pain. †Though I have not had hemorrhoids banded (I do have hems), †it is still a procedure and every one adjusts differently to the alteration of their body. †Sometimes recovery from a surgery or procedure takes longer than expected. †Please make sure you talk to your colo-rectal surgeon and ask if pain can be expected and how long you should try and tolerate it before it needs to be addressed (you may already know the answer to this). †It may take a couple weeks before things settle as this could be a normal side effect of the procedure and it has only been a couple days since this was done. †

My heart goes out to you as I completely understand that this is not easy and the pain must be awful. †You are doing great with soft foods, applesauce, veggies and fruit. †Definitely do what your doctor says but be careful about taking fiber supplements that contain psyllium husk. †You can overdue it with bulking fiber and sometimes get the opposite issue of bulky stools which will not be pleasant. It happened to me even with plenty of water. †If your stools are on time and soft, then keep up the good work! You're doing the right thing! †Prunes (if you like them) help as well. †I thought ewwww prunes and then tried one and said not bad!!!!!

You will get through this! †We will get through this (me with my mean fissure and you with your banded hem). †It will take time-yuck, but you will get through. †If you need to talk, †I'm here. †We can complain and laugh together! †I am still fairly young myself (at least I would like to think so!) and had an enlarged hemorrhoid (non-problematic) when I was about 17. †Although I can't remember what I was feeling, I'm sure it scared the crap out of me. †I mean who wants some weird bulge out of their anus. Our minds go crazy with the unknown. †There is some relief that you have a colo-rectal surgeon at your side if he or she is needed, you have been examined and you're not alone. †

Best wishes and I will keep you in my thoughts for a fast recovery!
