Hello I am not sure what is wrong with me and I was wondering if some of you can offer me advice based on what I tell you has been going on.
I am 20 years old now, when I was a child I had Giardia, a nasty little parasite. Supposedly I was treated and cured but this took place back in my home country Romania and as proud as I may be, I have little faith in their healthcare system, especially over ten years ago. Anyway, since I can remember, after I came to the U.S. when I was 9 years old, I have had stomach issues.
The last couple of years have been like this: every time I eat, ANYTHING, it can be fast food or a salad, ice cream or chocolate, home cooked meat or fish, anything at all, I go to the bathroom almost immediately with excruciating abdominal pain. The best way I have been able to describe my pain has been like going into labor, it comes in waves with a stabbing throbbing knife like sharpness and is usually accompanied by sweating and overheating, shaking and coldness in my extremities, dizziness and diarrhea.
Most of the time, which is actually on my best days, as soon as I get it out of me, the pain stops and I am back to normal. However I recently have started having these episodes that last hours where I am on the toilet with these waves of pain that are even more extreme and diarrhea that seems to go on forever. I get nauseous during these attacks as well but do not throw up. At most I have diarrhea seven or eight times during an episode and other times it can be only four or five times.
The other night I went to the ER because I started to have rectal bleeding after the eight time and the pain got so severe I was completely debilitated and hysterically crying. They did blood work, urine sample and a CTscan of my stomach and found all the results to not only be normal, but "perfect" as the doctor put it. Obviously this is not normal.
I have been skinny my entire life but I have lost about 20 pounds in the last 3 or 4 months and am very rarely eating now as I am afraid of these episodes being triggered. Does this sound like IBS? Would IBS be something that did not come up in the blood work or CTscan? What else could it be that would not come up in regular tests?
I do not know what to do. The only guess I have for what is happening is that the parasite I had as a child was not completely killed and has lingered on for the past 10+years. I am doing stool samples now and will bring them in to my doctor as soon as I have them all complete which will test for a parasite. But I am just desperate. I am 20 years old and cannot seem to catch a break from this pain and irregular bowel movements.
Do any of you have any ideas of what this might be?
