Hi everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read my message. I'm starting this thread in hopes I can get some further guidance, and maybe to just take something overall hopeful away from it.
The story is a bit long, but I'll try to condense it! Anyway, as the thread title suggests, I'm getting quite concerned about the possibility I may have colon cancer. A little bit about myself, I'm 29 years old in quite normal good health other than these worries are concerned and I know this doesn't mean everything, but there is no history of cancer within my family on either side. I keep active and exercise on a fairly regular basis, and my diet is generally pretty healthy.
This all kinda started a bit over a year ago in January 2011. I noticed blood on my stool one time and went to the doctor quickly after to talk about what happened. The initial doctor wasn't overly concerned and I went about my business and for the next little while never really noticed any problems. During the last year I've noticed a few different abdominal pains, but usually it's centred either around my upper right abdominal region, or the lower right.
During May 2011 I went to the doctor a couple of separate times, one for upper abdominal pain and then again as I thought I noticed a tinge of blood in my stool. The doc I saw referred me to another doctor who gave a brief (and uncomfortable, hehe) examination and said he felt an anal fissure which he felt were causing the problems. I felt generally fairly reassured about this and our conversation and went away again feeling ok.
Since that time I've noticed here and there what looks to be like blood appearing in my stool. I want to stress the here and there part just in case that's important. I can go weeks without seeing anything, and then the odd time I will notice a red streak or something red within the stool (could very well be poorly disgested veg though I think, I don't eat as slow as I should.)
In Early January of this year I had a bit of a scare one night when I went to the bathroom shortly before I was going to go to bed. The stool came out looking very red on the inside of the stool rather than the outside. I had never seen that much blood before and in my fear of the moment I went to the hospital and spent most of the rest of the night in the emergency room. They let me go after another uncomfortable examination and once they could verify my blood work and urine looked normal.
I've been in and out of worry about it every since. I've done several tests since that night in January. An ultra sound on my upper abdomen, and a detailed blood work, which everything came back perfectly normal on. I'm now currently awaiting an appointment with a gastroantomologist (know I spelled that wrong!) in early June. I'm glad I will be seeing the specialist, but having still more than two months to wait I find my anxiety about the situation is somewhat getting the best of me, like how by the time I finally do see the doctor it will be too late or something along those lines.
I'd like to assume it's not colon cancer because as I mentioned I first noticed blood appearing a while back and my thought is that colon cancer isn't exactly something that progresses that slowly...but of course I'm not an expert.
I guess in a selfish way I'm looking for a bit of reassurance from the community here and maybe to hear from anyone who's gone through what I'm dealing with now. Thanks again for taking the time to read my post, hopefully it wasn't too long!
