Angry pain and full of stool

I went to the ER and they gave me Lactulose but I had No results that I thought would take care of the main problem . So the next day I had been taking mag citrate and drank 1 bottle in the morning and 1 in the evening. But had no relief. (Except for the little that I had eaten that day).
Today I am doing the Fleets Phospho-sodium oral saline laxative. I have only drank the recommended liquids and ate 1 soft boiled egg. My tummy is so full of liquid I'm not hungry anyway. My question is if this also does not work my Dr. told me to go to the ER but to a different hospital tomarrow. My question is why won't this stuff come out and will I have to have surgery? I've read in here that miralax softens pre-existing hard stool and now I'm wondering if I'd a had results using this, altho I have had much liquid run thru' my colon. I will say that I take a tea with seanna leaves in it, and it produced a small bowel movement much earlier today. What is going on with me? I have never had such pain and misery. Also my left leg has been tender to touch. Can anyone give advise? This has been going on for about 12 days. I'm so tired of it all.

Re: pain and full of stool

I totally agree about going back to the ER. 12 days is WAY too long for this to be going on especially with all the stuff you have taken. There may be some sort of blockage but whatever it is needs attention and you shouldn't be taking so many laxatives. Let the Drs. get to the bottom of this.

All my best wishes...JJ....

Re: pain and full of stool

thank you all for your replies, however I do not think I was clear enough in my post. I've only been taking the laxitives since Tuesday and the last day , today, so 4 days. Seems to me the Dr. who saw the ex-ray would have realized this will not come out with laxitives. Do you think I will have to have surgery? Or will it come out by extraction. Will the dr. actually do this because I know they don't want to. Not that I blame them. Why can't they use colon hydrotherepy or something like it? Thanks for helping me.

Have you tried using a glycerin suppository to soften the stool that is already sitting in your rectum ? I have had chronic constipation problems all my life and I'll tell you this works the best for me if I haven't moved my bowels in 2-3 days in a row. The suppository can take up to an hour to work the longer it has been since you had a bowel movement. I recommend putting lots on vaseline on a gloved index finger and putting some just inside your rectum and also on the outside of your anus even before you insert the suppository to make it easier and less painful to pass the hard stool and to keep from irritating the skin on the outside. Sometimes the suppository can make it feel like a burning sensation when the hard stool first starts to come out. Lie on your left side on the bed with your left knee bent up towards your chest and your right leg straight out on top of the left leg. With a gloved right hand put lots of vaseline on the tip of the suppository and insert into your rectum as high up as you can until feel some resistance from hard stool. Stay lying on your left side on the bed for at least 20 minutes or until you get a very strong urge to have a bowel movement, Do not strain or force the hard stool out even though you feel like you have to get the stool out, instead take long slow deep breaths and hold it to the count of 15 and slowly exhale through pursed lips and do this continuously until you have had a bowel movement. It can take longer to have a bowel movement this way but I have found it to be so much painless than straining and forcing it out. When I am really constipated and I try to strain and force hard stool out it makes it feel like I have knife cutting me up inside as well as on the outside and sometimes the hard stool gets stuck halfway in and halfway out and I have to push and force all that much harder down my stomach to push it out. Boy,I can tell you that I got tears streaming down my face because it hurts so bad. Don't put yourself through that pain ! I have learned the hard way that eating a high fiber diet and drinking lots of water are the key to keep your bowels moving on a regular basis. I also have learned to have a set time schedule every day for sitting on the toilet for 30 minutes to have a bowel movement. The long slow deep breathing continuously helps all my muscles to relax so the stool comes out without pain from straining and forcing it out. Listening to relaxing music helps me to relax and concentrate on the slow deep breathing. I now know I can't go for more than 36 hours without having a bowel movement or it hurts to go if I allow it to go more than 48 hours. In this case I use a glycerin suppository to soften the stool already inside the rectum to make it easier to pass the stool. I hope this will help you so you don't allow yourself to get so constipated again because I know the pain from being that constipated and it's hell on earth when you can't go at all !

Re: pain and full of stool

Hi Julie, I can certainly identify with you. I had the same problem as you, still do but not as bad. Finally after seeing my dr a couple of times, he also sent me to the hospital, and after they tried all the regular protocol, they evacuated my colon through some sort of enema thing, but done in a controlled setting. They also used some oily stuff. It was uncomfy but tolerable. I was given lactolose as a script and I still have to use it. As long as I take the meds I am on, this will probably continue for me. I rarely can go on my own anymore.

Wink Re: pain and full of stool

Hi, you have to be really bad off and clogged and not responding to all the treatments before they will do surg. My 8 year old didn't poop for a month. Took him to the dr and for a week, we tired enema, mag citrate, suppositories. nothing worked. He looked like he was preg. He has always been stopped up and would finally go after making him and it would clog up the toilet, but this was not working. So, back to the dr. She said to go to the ER. They did x-ray and he was stopped up over 3/4 of his colon. They did admit him and said it was a common thing for people to be stopped up. Not to scare you, but they gave him an enema of milk and molasses. They also gave him the stuff called go lightly, which is the same stuff they give before a colonoscopy. Cleans you all out. Their moto was get it from the top and the bottom to break the dam. Well after 6 hours of labor for him he finally poo'd the blockage and he went from then on out. Got him cleaned out and we left the next day. It may just be that you need that x-ray to look in there to make sure it's just poo stuck. the more you don't go, the more water if pulled out of the stool and the harder it gets. When you then take things to get the stool softer, it takes a lot longer. For my son, it took literal force to get it out using liquids. He was at cookchildrens in Dallas, tx. They said they did at least one of those a nite and they had only done surg 1 time in years and the blockage was the size of a grapefruit. YA, that's what I said. Go to ER again, and give them details and make them listen. Good luck
