My x rays show a lot of stool but my c t scan and the small bowel follow thru show no obstruction. I am bloated and in a lot of pain. This is the forth time in 5 years this has happened. This is the worse. On the past, after being on I V for a few days they send me home as the pain has subsided. I have taken bowtrol a colon cleanse in between episodes and seem to be ok. Of I don't take it I am constantly constipated
I so tired of ending up in the hospital in severe pain so often. I can't understand why I cannot have a bm inspite of all they have given me. Tomorrow I am going for a colonoscopy and they are going to give me a double enema to try and clear me out first. I don't know of they can do it if not. Today was the first time the surgeon mentioned the possibility of a lazy bowel so I have been reading a lot on here. I am scared since nothing has worked and I am going into week three. Any thoughts ???!
Lazy bowel is when you're constipated all the time and use stimulant laxatives like enemas, suppositories(like ducolax),and colon cleanses to have bowel movements on a regular basis. Your colon becomes dependent on the laxatives to produce a bowel movement instead of peristalsis(colon contractions) to help give you the urge to go.
A redundant colon(extra loops and stretched out colon) is from years of chronic constipation where the stool(feces)presses against the colon wall and thins out the colon wall so the colon gets stretched out. The more stretched the colon wall becomes the more stool it takes to fill the colon and rectum before the peristalsis kicks in to give you the urge to go and meanwhile the stool gets backed up and becomes harder and drier so it doesn't move down the colon.
I have had chronic constipation all my life and know the pain from not being able to go and the pain it causes to try to force yourself to have bowel movement. I have found my main problem is a lack of fiber in my diet, lack of water, poor bowel habits. I now eat a high fiber diet 25-35 grams a day, drinking water instead of soda, other sugary drinks and milk. I now make myself sit on the toilet every day at the same time to have a bowel movement. If I have had plenty of water and fiber in my diet the day before it only takes me 2-5 minutes of sitting the toilet to have a bowel movement and I will have 2-3 bowel movements that day. I can't go more than 48 hours without having a bowel movement because if I do it's extremely painful to try to make myself go.
