I feel for you, I know how painful that sigmoidoscopy is if you have a fissure! You should probably try the Nitroglycerin cream, it might help to heal that fissure, but not the hemmorhoid. I had good luck with prescription Niphediphine, plus sitz baths can help, but don't sit there too long or you will aggravate the hemmorhoids. Do you have a good Colon/Rectal Specialist?

The Proctosol cream you were given was for the hemmorhoid, if that didn't work, ask your doctor about something like Dibucaine, which is non-prescription. The fissure can heal itself if it doesn't become chronic. Unfortunately, the hemmorhoid will not heal itself, you can try to keep it managed but there will be occasional flare ups. The only way to get rid of hemmorhoids is through surgery. I am doing the following to avoid having the surgery: Basically, you need to make sure you don't strain on the toilet. Make sure you get at least 25-30 grams of fiber both insoluable and soluable; build up slowly to this amount, to avoid excessive gas. Also very important, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, or you will get constipated from all the extra fiber. If you have trouble getting enough fiber, ask your doctor about a fiber supplement such as Citrucel or Metamucil to keep yourself regular. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Hi, I am a 64 year old male. I have used the nitroglycerin ointment for anal fissures. It burns a bit when you apply it but seems to have fixed the problem over about 2 months. Take lots of stool softeners and make sure that you don't get constipated. It will heal with time!

Re: suffering from anal fissure and hemmorhoids

I know exactly what you're talking about. I suffered horribly with an anal fissure after I had my first child. No doctor seemed to be able to help me. But then I finally found one! It took me over a year to get some real relief. You know what it was? Nitroglycerin and Vaseline! Is that what the ointment is?

Definitely use it!!!

Use only a very small amount or it will give you a headache. After suffering for so long and feeling like I missed out on the first year of my daughters life - this was the miracle cure I had been searching for. It was instant - there was no waiting around for days to see if it would work.

I do understand and appreciate where your apprehension to use something new comes from, because of the excruciating pain you don't want anything to make it any worse, i.e. burning and stinging.

Best wishes to you - hang in there, the end is in sight:)

Re: suffering from anal fissure and hemmorhoids

I just had surgery for anal fissures, hemmoroids and skin tags. I am a crohns disease vet. I have never felt anything like this god awful recovery. I am on day 4 still maxed out on pain meds, bleeding constantly, and unable to sleep more than 2 hours.

Follow your doctors advice don't let it get here. Take the medicine, use sitz baths, use a stool softener if you run constipated. If you are dealing with a more complicated issue (like crohns or UC) run to a qualified GI doctor and get treatment (the best they can do anyway). Do anything you can to avoid it going where this is I promise you this is misery.

( I didn't feel the fissures and only the roids when I had an active flare up the surgeon said I had several fissures, so imagine what this surgery feels like?)
