Unhappy scared and anxious, need advice :(

Hello! I posted this thread in the colon cancer section and i yhink that was the wrong spot to put it in..I am new to this site so bear with me y'all. My name is Ashley and I am 19 years old. I've been worrying alot lately and I feel as though I can't really talk about this with anyone close to me, so I figured id give this a shot..here goes nothing. For the past, I think, year I have been having blood on the toilet paper when I wipe. It is not in the toilet bowl or on the stool itself, just the toilet paper. It doesn't happen all the time, its just occasional and it is a verry minimal amount. When it does happen it is mostly tiny specs of bright red blood, and I mean tiny specs. One time there was a pink smudge. Whenever it does happen I do notice that there is a burning sensation after the bowel movement t for a few hours and then it goes away. I was stupid and looked up my symptoms in Google and bam, now I'm convinced I have colon cancer and am dying. I guess I have health anxiety issues. I do not have health insurance and cannot afford tests, I did get worried one time and visited the urgent care where they did a finger rectal exam and said they felt nothing, and the X-ray showed a moderate amount of stool in my colon so they told me I needed more fiber and to change my diet. I've also noticed over the past week and a half or so that whenever I pass a stool, it comes out in balls or pellets and I have to strain. So I went out and got some dulcolax stool softener and ever since I took some of those yesterday my stool has been thin and soft. I am worried and need advice on this please.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

Normally I would advice seeing a doctor immediately if there is blood in the stool, just to rule out anything really serious, such as colon cancer, among other things. It is possible you simply have hemmorhoids or an anal fissure, but your doctor needs to diagnose this. Try to avoid straining on the toilet! This can cause hemmorhoids and anal fissure, in fact, it is best not to spend more than 2-3 minutes on the toilet, to avoid straining! You want to make sure to get at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and even Metamucil or Citrucel. Also very important, you need to get 64 ounces of water along with the fiber, or you can make yourself constipated and you don't want that! The fact that you are passing pellets signals constipation. An occasional dose of Miralax or stool softener is okay but it would be so much better if you could change your diet naturally. Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

Thanks so much for replying. The first couple times it happened I went to urgent care, but they don't do tests like that unless it's an emergency. He just felt inside and said that he couldn't feel anything but that didn't mean that I didn't have a fissure or a hemmorhoid. Is it rare for people my age to have colon cancer? My parents think I'm crazy for thinking such a thing, but I always think the worst when it comes to my health. My best friend died from cancer and that's why I think like that. But I almost always have to strain. I've been taking dulcolax since yesterday and when I did it made me have thin soft stool? Is that normal for taking a stool softener or laxative? I don't think I've had a "normal" bowel movement in about 2 weeks I'd say. And the thing about the blood is that its never in the toilet or on my stool, its just on the toilet paper in little, almost like if you've had a paper cut and you dab the tiny area. And sometimes I will be left with a burning sensation after a bowel movement and ill dab the area and that's when the little specs show up. And when I looked it up it sounded exactly like a fissure! I am just at a loss right now. I do not have the money to get a colonoscopy and it scares me...I keep thinking "what if?" But thank you for replying it has helped calm me down some.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

Please take a deep breath and relax! You're going to be fine!

I would say it would be very unusual for someone as young as you to have colon cancer; and that is why I suggested having yourself checked out by a good doctor. I would have thought the ER docs could have seen if you did indeed have an anal fissure. If you are feeling the pains after using the toilet, and I mean for a long time after going to the toilet, it could very well be an anal fissure. I had this last year, I was very fortunate my doctor prescribed something called Niphediphine, which is an ointment. It healed the fissure in 2 months. Another suggestion is to purchase a Sitz Bath at any drugstore. A few minutes of soaking in warm water can help to relieve that pain after a BM and also I forgot to mention, toilet paper is extremely irritating to the tender skin if you have an anal fissure. Try Baby Wipes or Tucks wipes.

RE: costs? Our local hospital has a healthcare clinic that is government funded and provides services on a sliding scale, You may not need a colonoscopy, just a doctor to look at that cut and see if it could be treated by Niphediphine or some people have used Nitroglycerin cream and had success.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

I forgot to say in my last post, I hate to use laxatives and stool softeners; I consider them for when all else fails. Are you by chance taking any medications which could be causing constipation, such as pain meds, etc? For me, Dulcolax causes that pasty, hard to clean yourself stool. Yes, I know, gross, but that's what this forum is for LOL! If you can, try a fiber supplement such as Citrucel or Metamucil instead, make sure you take in lots of water with it or else it can cause constipation though. Good luck to you

I have calmed down some. And I will be sure to get some metamucil or something of that sort and see if it helps! I also have seen some colon probiotics and it says it also helps regulates bowel movements. Do you know anything about them? And as I said before, it's definitely not every time I go that there's bleeding. Occasionally there is, and a very minimal amount. Sometimes the burning is there, and sometimes its not. The doctor said just because he couldn't see anything doesn't mean there's not a little internal fissure or something like that he can't see. Hoping that's all it is! But I took another dulcolax last night and this morning drank some iced coffee (I also just started NY period...TMI LOL but it goes along with this) and I just had an easier bowel movement. No blood. But as I said before my stool is still in thinner pieces, not as thin as yesterday though. Does stool softeners cause that sometimes? Sorry for the too much info! Lol. And as for medications I am on Cephalexin antibiotic for a UTI as of Sunday. I also take ibuprofen almost daily for pain management because after I turned up EBV positive I got mono, and after being sick I have chronic aches and pains. The doctors think it's just fibromyalgia but I haven't been to a rheumatoid specialist yet. Not too worried with it. Thanks again for shedding some light on this! Helps a great deal and its nice to have someone to talk to!

Oh, and the reason I am wondering if the stool softener can cause thin stools is because, thanks to Google, it says thin ribbon like stools could indicate colon cancer. I've had the occasional thin stool but this started when I started taking dulcolax.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

Im 25, and I freaked out about the same exact thing. It happened once when I was around your age. I obviously thought I was dying. It went away a day or so later. A few years later it came back, but it was like a daily thing for some time. I was terrified that I had cancer or something, but it went away again. It popped up here and there for a few years, until I finally got the courage to tell my doctor. It's pretty embarrassing! She told me she'd take a look, but wasn't too worried about it. She told me someone young like us most likely wouldn't have colon cancer. You'd probably have other symptoms aside from blood. If it's bright red, it's originating from near the opening...meaning it's probably hemorrhoids or an anal fissure. If it's darker, like brown...you DEF need to go see your doctor because that means its deeper in.

Take a stool softener like Ducolax for a few days. It'll soften it enough so your body can heal whatever it is that's bleeding. If it's only specks, its probably not that bad. I've had blood on the toliet paper, and even in the toliet bowl...enough to make the water red. It goes away though. Get more fiber over the long term! If you don't eat alot of fiber rich food, try a supplement. Target has a bottle of psyllium husk for a few bucks. And make sure you drink enough water. Dehydration or not enough fiber can cause constipation, or cause you to not go #2 as often as you should. It'll also soften it up a bit so it doesn't cause any rips or tears as it comes out. A big hard turd can do damage as it makes its way out.

You mentioned you were on antibiotics. Antibiotics can cause constipation because it kills beneficial bacteria in your intestines responsible for digestion. I'd wait to take probiotics until after you finish the antibiotics, otherwise the antibiotic will be killing off anything you take anyway. You should probably always take probiotics after taking a round of any antibiotic...it will replace the good stuff that was killed off.

Another thing to consider is the ibuprofen. Long term high doses of ibuprofen can cause GI bleeding. But again, if it was something serious the blood would probably be alot darker, and not bright red.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

Hey! Yeah I was embarrassed when I went to the urgent care hospital place. He said that he couldn't do any of those fancy tests like colonoscopies or sigmoidoscopies unless it was a true medical emergency and that from the way I was describing the bleeding he was pretty sure it's not serious. The antibiotic I'm on usually would cause diarrhea but its one I've been on alot in the past and it doesn't do that to me. And I'm pretty sure its not the antibiotic causing the constipation, its been happened since before I started taking it. I didn't know antibiotics could cause constipation though! Do you know of stool softeners could cause thinner, softer stool? Mine have been thin for 2 days since I started taking dulcolax. Freaks me out! Colon cancer...ugh. But I will definitely be taking a trip to the store and getting some supplements or metamucil, probiotics it something! I might try activists yogurt too, I heard that would help with regulation also. When I was in middle school I had an endoscopy and was told I had severe H. Pylori infection. I was on medication for that on and off for about 2 years and since then my stomach hasn't been the same either. They finally told me I was all clear and that I had IBS, but to me that honestly sounded like JUST speculation. I seem to think it's true sometimes with the way my stomach acts up and how my bowels are. Its nice to know I'm not alone! Haha.

Yea, probiotics seem like they would help you considering your history. They have those little probiotic pearls at the grocery store that are supposed to be good. And yea, the stool softener can do weird things to your poo, so I wouldn't read into it too much. I too have health anxiety and think everything is wrong. Worrying about it makes a very simple non threatening thing seem like the end of the world. Keep your head up! Let us know how everything works out.

I would definitely try the probiotics; since you are taking antibiotics, which destroy your body's good bacteria in your guts. Whenever I have to take antibiotics, I get diarrhea. For me, taking the probiotics helps to restore balance and I would just make sure to take the probiotics a few hours after you take the antibiotics so the good bacteria won't be destroyed. Also, you have mentioned yogurt, I totally agree, I started eating Stonyfield Organic yogurt and I have never felt so good in my guts before, and this from someone who is lactose intolerant!

As for the thin stools, keep note of how long this lasts, if say it's a constant over say a month, call your doctor. But I know for me, taking Dulcolax causes the stool to be pasty, difficult to clean yourself up afterward, which could translate into thin. Other things can cause thin stools that don't mean colon cancer or bowel obstruction. If it helps you to take the stool softener, making it easier to pass, then by all means, continue it as this may help the fissure to heal, constipation is a big problem for those of us with fissure or hemmorhoids.

Before I forget, my colon rectal specialist also said that what you eat can affect whether you have thin stools, the volume of the stool changes depending on if you have a fiber rich diet or not. You might also consider trying flaxseed with yogurt and fruit in a smoothie; it is fiber rich and full of other good stuff and helps with colon health. Anyway, I used to get all embarassed talking about this kind of stuff, but hey, it affects everybody at some point in their life, better to talk about it here! Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

I am definitely going to get some colon probiotics after I'm through with medication. I can't go yet so I have to wait. But I have been eating more yogurt and healthier stuff these past couple days, tonight I made the mistake of eating pizza! Gah, that's not going to be good LOL. But I do love Smoothies so I think ill start making myself some fruit smoothies. Thanks for all the tips and advice, it really helps alot! Next time I go to the store I have a feeling I'm going yo be buying ALOT! But that's fine with me, I'm totally trying to be healthier. And in top of all this I am also trying to lose some weight, so I guess it all works hand in hand. And yeah I was embarrassed about talking about things like this, but not here. People can actually relate to what you are talking about. Thanks again for some really helpful advice! I will let you know how everything is going over the past few days.

Re: scared and anxious, need advice :(

I thought I'd give an update. I stopped taking dulcolax because it regulated me again. Everything was going great and I was actually having normal bowel movements. This morning, though when I went to the restroom, bowel movement was normal but there was some red blood on the toilet paper. Stool and toilet bowl water was fine, no blood. I panicked for a second but then I realized that as I was going, it hurt...kind of like a burning pain. I'm thinking anal fissure still, as I'm pretty sure colon cancer can't make your bottom burn or hurt when u go! Any ideas?
