Re: New here

Hi Welcome to the Bowel disorder board! I hope the needed support and help is found. The health professional such as a gastroenterologist might make a diagnostic for the bathroom difficulty and a rheumatologist or physiatrist might be able to make a diagnosis for the leg and back pain. Of course everyone makes their own health care decisions. Personally I would avoid mentioning anxiety to them.

Are you maybe taking some new medication ? Many of the medications we take can cause constipation. Usually the pharmacy gives you a print out about your medication and it usually gives the side effects it can cause.
I have had chronic constipation problems all of my life and know what you're talking about when you say that you feel pressure and pain. I get that pressure and pain in my rectum when I haven't moved my bowels in 3 days in a row or more. I use a glycerin suppository to help soften the stool in my rectum and to make it easier to go. I also don't strain or force the stool out. I do slow deep breathing exercises continuously until I have moved my bowels.
Over the last fifteen months I have changed my eating, drinking, and bowel habits and this has helped me to maintain regularity. This is what I do on a daily basis:
1. I drink at least 64 oz. a day of water.
2. Eat 25-35 grams a day of fiber.
3. Take Citrucel in the morning and at night.
4. I have a set time schedule everyday to sit on the toilet to move my bowels. I allow 30 minutes for this and I do it even before I take my morning shower. What I have found that makes it easiest way to move my bowels without straining and forcing myself to go is to take slow deep breathing exercises continuously until I have moved my bowels. It relaxes all my muscles and the rectal and anal muscles making it easier to pass the stool without pain. I also put on relaxing music which helps me to concentrate on the breathing exercises and helps me to relax my mind as well. If I follow all four of these steps every day then I move my bowels on a daily basis. As soon as I get lazy about any one of these four steps for more than two days then it really hurts to move my bowels on the third day.
