for those with prolapsed or thrombosed hemorrhoids

If you dont mind me asking- can you share your symptoms with me? My GP seems to think I could be suffering from either or..
My "telltale" symptom is swelling and lumps around the outside of my anus that varies in degree of blue/purple/natural color.. swelling goes away after an hour sometimes longer. Also blood when wiping.
Seeing a specialist in the coming weeks to confirm.. are they likely to do any procedures for my first appointment or am I paying $170 for nothing?

H Ghoulz,
firstly i would say that paying $170 is not a waste, you have to get these seen to and by a specialist, Period....

if the swelling appears shortly after a Bowel Movement and then goes away a few hours early , to me (and I'm no expert but speaking from my own experience) it sounds like a prolapse. This is what i had and i can tell you that it only gets worse with age. They get bigger and if left untreated will end up prolapsing 24/7.
Thrombosed are hard clots that take weeks to reside and are a lot more painful than an internal prolapsing.

Put dignity aside and get your bum sorted asap
in the meantime try not to strain, take a stool softener, (which is not necessarily a laxative) drink 2lts+ water a day, apples and avoid processed food
best of luck

Re: for those with prolapsed or thrombosed hemorrhoids

When you see the specialist, they may attempt to do a rubber banding ligation the same day as the first visit. I went to one who used the CRH-O'Regan method, and it is extremely fast and feels about the same as an anoscopy examination. So, make sure you don't have to sit or stand for a long time after your appt in case they do a rubber banding during that first visit. Usually you can resume normal activity the next day, but I would pad an extra day in case there is a lot of discomfort.

I have a very large prolapsing internal hemorrhoid, and so far have done 2 rubber band treatments - started at the top and slowly decreasing the tissue so it is easier to go back in. I have to manually push it back in (make sure to use lubrication such as vaseline or prep h cream or ointment or you may cause the skin to tear, which is the second problem I'm dealing with right now - a fissure!). I wish I had done it earlier when it was smaller and could have banded the entire thing, but now we are just taking it one step at a time to see if we can avoid surgery (I have follow-up bandings scheduled every 2-3 weeks). I have also started taking Citrucel as a fiber bulk laxative supplement every day to keep myself regular and to avoid straining.

If you have internal throbbing even after it retracts, then part of it could have become thrombosed and it takes a few days for it to get reabsorbed in the bloodstream. I've taken ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and help with the pain too.
