We are due to go on holiday on 6/7/2012, but my husband strated with rectal bleeding, he went to the docs and he was convinced it was through taking ibruffin with a blood thinner he has taken for 10 years. He saw a private specialist on the same day and he said it was the cause, however he wants him to have a sigmoidoscopy, (camera up the bottom) and booked him in after the holiday saying he does not think anything sinister is going on.
but I cannot go away with that hanging over us, he also had some blood tests
whilst seeing him. do you think we have cause for concern ?its driving us crazy
This procedure is pretty routine. The doctor would not be doing his job if he didn't follow up, and he wouldn't have reassured him if he really felt it was bad. Go on your holiday, and enjoy it. Sera

Hi,
If he has been taking Ibuprofen then it could be the result of an Ulcer.
After taking Ibuprofen myself I had blood come up through my mouth in the night.
An Endoscopy showed I had had an Ulcer, Ibuprofen can cause bleeding from the Stomach which can present itself from both areas.
The Colonoscopy is the correct procedure for bleeding from the Rectum, and it may just be Hemorrhoids.
Go and enjoy your holiday, if your Dr had any real concerns he would have had your husband admitted to the Hospital,
Hope you have a good holiday and try not to worry.

What I cannot understand is, if the doc put his finger up my husbands bottom ,also the specialist and said there was no blood there how could it be piles bleeding, also its been going on fo six days now and still a bit of blood there. he has been taking assasantin fo 10 years (a blood thinner) could that have caused something ?
he does have little pins in his tummy, of feeling he wants to go to the loo.
we are both very worrie today, but will phone the specialist in the morning.(do I hate Sundays when nobody is available)
I have read or heard it somewhere before that," worry is what the godless do in lieu of practicing faith"... There could be a myriad of things that could be causing the blood to appear. It could as simple as not enough water in your diet. Causing constipation, one easy way to ensure that your ibuprofen doesn't cause ulcers is to eat properly and drink milk while taking it. So to recap try these simple things and enjoy your vacation.
Do not worry about a condition that is not a serious injury, serious injuries usually involve broken bones and punctured skin. Drink plenty of water , at least one liter each day, when taking ibuprofen wash it down with a glass of milk and only take it at meal times or within 30 minutes of your last meal. Also refrain from putting things up your bum that is a very sensitive area down there and the blood vessels are very close to the surface. Any irritation to the tissue there could rupture a vessel and be the cause of bleeding.

The other thing that is worying me is that instead of going to the loo in the morning and having a good bowl opener, he is going a few times throughout the day but when he gets to the loo its just squidgy bits with blood on them,
surely that cannot be piles??

Hi wenlast,
I really feel you have nothing to worry about.
Now if your husband was losing clots or enough blood in the bowl to fill say a cup then that would be a different matter.
Your Dr has booked him in for a Colonoscopy right after your holiday and you wont get much faster than that. When I lost blood from my mouth due to an Ulcer I had to wait for two weeks.
Whatever it is he will find out after the Colonoscopy. If he is feeling OK otherwise you should take the holiday and relax until you come back,
I wish you both well,
Solofelix.

"Sorry" about the holiday but you know best.
I suffer IBS and one of the symptoms are frequent bowel movements and small stools.
The blood is a different matter, I dont have that problem so cannot advice you on that matter.
Please let us know what was found after the Colonoscopy and my best wishes to you and your husband.
Hi,
For my Ulcers (two) I was prescribed NEXIUM to control the acid and give the Ulcer time to heal.
As I said blood from a bleeding Ulcer can present from the rectum or like mine through my mouth. As mine was due to H.Pylori I was prescribed two different Antibiotics and the Nexium.
Ulcers can present themselves without having H.Pylori.
I also have Diverticulitis which is mostly more common in older people (Thats me!!..) but I didnt have any blood, I had lots of pain on the left side below the ribs and a change in stools
and bowel movements,

Specialist secretary phoned today, they are fitting him in Thursaday at 5pm
blood test came back the CEA test was normal, lets hope it go's Ok and we can get of Friday
As you have all been reading about my husbands rectal bleeding this week,
he had a CEA Blood test that came back normal, they have managed to fit him in for the colonoscopy on Thursday at 5pm day before our proposed holiday.
But my main worry is that he has not opened his bowel properley for four days, only squidgy bits with blood on it,tonight the same.
why do you think he cannot do a proper motion ????

"Thats great news"...
Hope all goes well and you are able to get away.
Keep me informed, I will say a prayer for your husband,
There are various reasons for that, one of which would be inflammation in the lower part/rectum that could be caused by severe hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, infection, etc.
It's good he's having the c-scope asap....hopefully the visual and biopsies will state the problem and he'll get treatment to have him feeling better.

Still worried though,he has not been to the loo for four days, only little bits with blood on them, is he constiopated he can't go on until Thursday like that.
Has he been given the three day diet with medication to clean him out before the procedure.
Believe me that will do the job!!... He could take a laxative, prunes or fresh figs before then.
I cant remember the name of the prep I was given before my Colonoscopy but it (would move a mountain)... forgive the pun...
My main worry is, he has not had a proper bowel movement for 5 days, only little bits with blood on them, how long can piles bleed for,if it is piles because there is still blood there.
also why cannot he have a proper bowel movement ???
