My healed abscess wound from a few months re-opened.

I had an abscess near my anal area a few months back, one near the sphincter. It took about 2 months to heal itself after it was drained. Since then I've had a few fissures, or openings which I dismissed as a fissure.

These openings had some fluid and blood, which didn't look like a fresh open wound.

But today, the area in which my abscess healed opened up again. It opened up as a tiny hole, kind of like how it was when it was trying to heal.

If I do have a fistula, would this fistula cause all these opening in my skin everywhere?

I've googled, but I want to know what I can expect, and if anything can be done in my situation. I'm very very scared to go through surgery and I'm not sure what to expect. I don't even know why I started to get a fistula.

Thanks.

Re: My healed abscess wound from a few months re-opened.

Hi...how many openings are you talking about?

You would initially have to be referred to an anorectal surgeon and either ultrasound or x-rays to see the extent of the probable fistula/fistulas and from where, It's possible that your abscess hasn't fully healed as of yet.

I would be afraid of surgery as well, I have a friend who's had many for her multiple fistulas....but she has Crohn's disease that is causing them. Different situation than yours.

There's nothing that you did that caused it....but you do have to take control at this point and get them dealt with.

I feel for you, your frustration level is very evident. Please don't blame yourself for anything, for it'll only cause you more anguish.
It's possible that this can be dealt with not to return...you won't know until it's assessed.

Please let me know what's happening.

I did a visual inspection, and I'm pretty sure it's the same location as the incision they made to drain the abscess 3 months ago. When I wiped after BM, I noticed a very small pink/tint on the napkin and that's how I figured. It's just that one opening. Smaller than .5CM. It wasn't fresh red blood though, but light pink. It seemed dejavu, kind of like when I was trying to heal from my abscess incident. It doesn't leak constantly and I don't need a pad.

I was pretty sure that the incision location was fully healed though. I had made a thread a few months back and was worried that the would did not close. Eventually it did close though, about 8 weeks after surgery, unless it never did, or ruptured again.

I'm trying to find a specialist in colon/rectal surgery but I'm extremely sensitive as to who to see. I often read about a misagnose or plenty of un-necessary and painful surgery.

I'm trying my best to be strong, but I'm so worried about it affecting my school and work, but I know health is important. Still, the overcast this has caused worries me a lot. I'm going to call today. I'll let you folks know.

I really appreciate the support you've given to us quincy. It means a lot.

Hi...you're most welcome, I can offer what I know or have learned.

I, too, would be constantly worried....whether I went to a doctor or worse if I kept putting it off.

Definitely let me know what comes of the call you make.

Hi I managed to find a good CRS and have made an appointment. The thing is, it won't be until August 1st.

I'm going to worry, but what if this opening closes by itself? Would the scans and examination be possible to detect a fistula?

They are extremely booked, but they told me to go to the ER should anything happen and to call back to see if there are cancellations from now till then.

Thanks

Re: My healed abscess wound from a few months re-opened.

From what I understand, a fistula is better to be open than closed, especially if one has an abscess from which it's connected.

It's good you've got an appointment and are on a cancellation list. But I would also suggest that if it gets worse, go to the ER as you did in the past.

Have you tried sitz baths? I think they're helpful..I can ask my friend about that.

Thanks for the sitz bath idea. I used it when I had my abscess incision.

I just hope to maintain my health until that time and go from there. It's quite an anxious wait though. Everything is fine in terms of pain, it's just that when I wipe, I would sometimes see some red/pink spots.

Using the shower head, I would have to gently clean the area. One thing's for sure though, I shower that area a bit more than I used to. Possibly 3-5x a day. lol

When I exercise and sweat, I try to take a shower right after. I'm also conscious about sitting too long.

I'll update and see how it goes. Thanks..

Re: My healed abscess wound from a few months re-opened.

It's good you focus on the area of hygeine, I think it can help tremendously regarding possible infection, etc.

My friend has a bidet...a personal must in her lifestyle. I've never tried one, but the hand shower is a must for me after any/all bms..unless it ever should happen away from home...wetted toilet paper or moist wipes would be the next best option. I'm thankful I don't have any out of home needs, however.

Thanks for the updates.

Re: My healed abscess wound from a few months re-opened.

I can't send you a reply..reread the rules..apologies.

Have you done a search on this forum for other fistula posts/threads? Maybe you can get more information and see if other members have had success with specific treatments, etc.

I don't want to be the only one giving you answers since I've not had any fistulas.
