Colon Resection follow up

Hi all, I need your input. I had an open colon resection 6 mo. ago due to a pre-cancerous polyp. Now, although I have no problems or symptoms, my doctor wants to do another Colonoscopy. My question: is this common? Do other doctors do a 6-month followup Colonoscopy? I realize it is only a diagnostic test but it involves anesthetic. I wonder if I should put my body through it if it is not necessary. Also, I am on Medicare and wonder if they will pay for it. Any advice you can give me will be appreciated.
