Blood in the stool can be bright red when it comes from low in the large intestine or rectum, or if coming from high up, like a bleeding ulcer in the stomach, it can be black like tar on the stools or even dark maroon if bleeding very actively high up. Blood tends to irritate the GI tract and sometimes will cause diarrhea. There is a very simple test for blood in the stool. Since bleeding can be intermittent, it is best to check 3 separate times. You should see your Dr for that test and discuss any other symptoms or possible causes.
