Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

About the celiac disease the previous poster mentioned, I thought I was celiac positive when I had diarrhea for 1,5 month. Some months before, rye bread gave me diarrhea 2 times a day. But can celiac cause constipation ? No matter what I eat constipation is there. There were times in the past I could eat the worst fast food with 1-2 glasses of water daily because of busy life, but my bowel was working like charm. I don't know what's wrong with me, whether I eat all the pooping foods or not, I will poop every other day or third unless i get laxative. After the yesterday's diarrhea (thanks to mom) I still haven't managed to poop. No urge at all, no discomfort. I ordered flax seeds, dried apricots, goji berries and rye flakes. I believe that all these foods will make the "daily trick"

About my eating habbits I eat very healthy, I drink Green, Black, Rooibos or Matcha (Powdered green tea) daily. I know that black tea constipates, but I've never had issues with the black tea before, so I keep drinking it. I combine those teas with honey most of the times, so hot drink + honey + (lemon sometimes) = BM, but apparently this stopped working for me.

Also, can sitting almost all day to be the cause of this problem ?
I walk 20 mins to go to college, sit there for 5-6 hours, 20 mins to get back (fast pace) and after that I sit almost all day in front of computer to work (or I can jog sometimes). Maybe I need to stay in stand up position more hours ??

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Not being a doctor I can't diagnosis your problem so whether or not Celiac Disease causes constipation or more importantly whether or not you have it would have to be determined via a blood test. But hearing all the products you are ordering and all things you are tying you sound desparate and wanting the quick fix. Unfortunately my friend often there is not that quick fix but rather you have to stick with one specific routine for a period of time and this could means weeks not days to see what works. After 5 different tests the doctors found out I have an overgrowth the bacteria in my small bowel which could cause both diarrhea and constipation. But this was only diagnosised by a specific test. It was from this finding that the appropriate treatment was utilized and now I am symptom free after years of misery. And I am 54 years old. So once again I go back to my previous post if this continues, I recommended getting to a good GI doctor who can help you figure out what is the root cause of your problem. Because it may not be a simple, tea, fig, date, berry, etc that is going to do the trick. In fact now that I am through the treatment and no longer have any bacteria in my small bowel, my doctor tells me to limit my fiber intake, only 2 fruits a day, no mulitgrain breads, All Bran, oatmeal, flaxseed, apples, pears, dairy, etc just to give you a small example of the changes. I no longer need all this because my body just does what it is supposed to do. Keep me posted.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Yeah, I know that something is not right here. You said "because my body just does what it is suppose" and I understand this, because I said in the past I could eat the worst foods with very little water and have a BM. Ok, a bad diet can bring constipation/diarrhea but not on a frequent basis. Me, whether I do the healthiest (pooping) diet or not, the bowel will move every other day (unless I drink 15 glasses of water with 15 dried prunes) and now I'm afraid that it's started to be every 2 days.
The reason I haven't gone in doctor yet is that I am just 20 years old, healthy without any disease hereditary factors. Although I have all the symptoms of IBS, I don't have any spasms, so that I could be able to end up in a possible self-diagnosis.
I ordered these foods because I really need a quick fix. I'm in a bad economic situation to start examinations on doctors, because I'm sure that a GI is not enough (I may need an endocrinologist as well)
The bacteria overgrowth seems to be the potential diagnosis for me.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Hi,
I really dont think you should be so worried. Everyone's bowels work differently and unless you are experiencing other symptoms then that's most likely the way yours work . Even if there has been a change in recent years.
A relation of mine only ever went once or twice a week and a top specialist told her thats the way she was and that she had no cause to worry.
Having said that she had all the nessesary investigations before being told this.
I would say to you get and see your Dr and if he feels it nessesary he will treat you accordingly.
Good Luck,

Solofelix.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Stefa: Have you tried taking a probiotic or eating more yogurt to reduce the bad bacteria? How much meat do you eat? I heard a lady on tv talking about that anyone that ate meat that is fed antibiotics should take a probiotic every day. You don't realize how much of that is passed on to us through our meat and food supply. You could probably use a good detoxification of your body as well. And I do think sitting a lot is not good. Exercise is good to help move things around. Are you heavy/overweight?

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I have had chronic constipation problems all my life so I certainly can understand your discomfort and frustration with not being to move your bowels on a regular basis.
I bought a book from Amazon.com called The Bowel Book by Michael Leavitt. The book is no longer in print so I had to order it from Amazon.com as a used book. My book arrived in excellent condition. It has a section called
"The seven elements of a highly bowel habit." According to this book, once we get the urge and go and sit on the toilet that we should be able to move our bowels within 2 minutes of sitting on the toilet. We should move our bowels either every day or every second day.
What I have found that works the best for me to keep my bowels moving every day is : sitting on the toilet for 30 minutes every morning to move my bowels before I even get into the shower. I take this time very early in the morning before my roommate gets up for work. I do this so I am able to relax enough to go without forcing myself to go. I do slow deep breathing exercises to help me to relax while listening to relaxing music. It also helps to relax the rectal and anal sphincter muscles making it a lot easier to move my bowels without pain. I can't allow myself to go any longer than 36 hours without moving my bowels because if I do it hurts so much the next day to go. I also know if I don't drink enough water and get enough fiber into my body then it takes me a lot longer on the toilet to go and my stool is a lot harder to pass. I also think I tend to have a very sluggish colon so I get constipated very easily. When I haven't moved my bowels within the 36 hour time frame then I will use a glycerin suppository to help me to go and to soften the stool so it doesn't hurt so much to pass. I hope these tips might help you to be able to go on a more consistent basis.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I'm back for updates.
I'm not overweight, I would say a bit thin.
2 days ago, I had to take milk of magnesia (40ml) because 2,2 days passed and still felt nothing. After 3 hours it did the trick (a semi-watery BM). The next day I had a BM in less than 24 hours and that's because the milk of magnesia was still "working". After that BM, I started to have terrible stinky gases every 5 minutes for some hours. The same thing continues today.
Today, I woke up, ate Musli along with rye flakes and drunk 2 glasses of water. Some hours later when I got back home, I ate 2 full teaspoons of ground flaxseed with 2 glasses of water. I ate and then drunk 1 tea and later 2 glasses of water. After that I ate 2 dried figs, 6 dried apricots and 10-13 pieces of dried goji berries (the big ones). After that I drunk one cup of powederd green tea (matcha). Of course, there were intervals after each food/drink.
No bowel movement so far, not any urge to go. I forgot how it is to stimulate a strong peristalsis. As you can see, all these high-fiber foods had no effect one me
Now I have terrible gases in the left side of the abdomen.
About probiotics, I haven't try them. When I had diarrhea for 1,5 month I tried the strong ones and did nothing.
When I had diarrhea, I tried the BRAT diet to fix it, along with all the anti-diarrhea foods and no effect.
Now I had the no-urge constipation, I tried all the foods which gives diarrhea, and no luck.
Of course, If I manage to have a BM, the stools are soft, so I mean it's not neccessary to ask any pressure, because the problem is the weak urge.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Well, Stefa191, I don't know what else to tell you besides getting in to see a gastroenterologist and get some help there. Someone may have already recommended it. You can get checked for chrone's, IBS, diverticulitis, etc. They can do a scan of your intestines, check your gallbladder, sent you to a nutritionist, and more. They can give you the right meds that will keep you flowing. I wish you luck.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Stefa191 I know you were hoping for a quick fix especially with your financial situation. I can truly appreciate this overwhelming place you are in but a doctor is the only person who can help you get to the cause of your problems. On this board we can only tell you what has worked for each of us and this may not be what is in your best interest. You have to do what is best for you. Take care.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Hello again,
I increased the dose of flaxseed to 4 teaspoons (2 tablespoons) every day and now I have a bowel movement in less than 24 hours. Actually, after 1 successfull bowel movement every day, I started to get some kind of loose stools so I will limit the dose to 2 teaspoons every day. I was taking the flaxseed along with 2-3 glasses of water. It did the trick ! I will order 5Kg of this magic seed.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I am so glad to hear you found something that worked for you. Now just monitor your progress, stay consistent, watch for triggers if there are any changes to your BM's and drink lots of water. People who do not struggle with this have no idea how all consuming proper bowel function can be for us. Take good care of yourself.

I put flax seed in my oatmeal,as the oatmeal is a water soluble fiber which helps to draw water into the large intestine. You want to draw water into the large intestine to help the stool to move along down the colon and make the stool soft so it's a lot easier to pass. I also eat six stewed prunes or stewed apricots for breakfast along with the oatmeal.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I haven't eat today flaxseed in order to prevent diarrhea, but I haven't got a BM for today. Now I can be sure that flaxseed is definitely the thing that <<moves the stuff>>

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Hello again,
After some weeks which I was able to poop, now I am again in the same situation. I take daily a high amount of fiber, bran flakes along with oatmeal for breakfast, 2 huge tablespoons of ground flaxseed, oranges, kiwis, tangerines, dried prunes but nothing is working. Large bowel peristaltic movements are getting harder every day. Now, I can't feel anything anymore. I feel my bowel very full, thanks to the flaxseed which increases the stool volume, but no urge to poop again. I don't know what's wrong with me
I wish I had the same urge to poop, like the urge to pee.
