No urge for daily bowel movement

Hello,
I am a male 20 years old and the last 3 weeks I can't have a daily bowel movement. Yes, I know that it's normal to go every other day, but all my life I used to have a BM almost in daily basis.
About my "bowel" history :
In the past winter (December 2011 - May 2012), I was frequent almost daily, I could go etc Monday-Tueday-Wednesday-Thursay-Saturday. From May to the end of June I faced trouble going daily. I had 4-5 BM's every week. After that period, for almost 2 months I had diarrhea, same time every day. One loose BM every day, same time. There was a strong urge then, which I wish I could have it during this period. After 2 months of diarrhea BM's, for almost 2-3 weeks I was fine. A normal BM every day, the same time.
What I tried :
Nowadays, I can't stimulate peristalsis every day, no matter what I do.
I have tried high fiber foods with lots of water, I have tried drinking olive oil with 2 glasses of warm water, followed by a warm water with honey in it. I exercise daily (walking 30 min or jogging 20 min), I have tried eating 10 prunes followed by water. Generally I have tried the most powerful combinations to have a BM, but guess what ? Nothing is happening. In a normal bowel, all these things would give a BM 10 times a day. But in me, nothing's working. My bowel became so stubborn to be daily active.
I also tried magnesium carbonate supplement (220mg) in an empty stomach. I heard that it regulate muscle function, and this includes intestinal muscles. Magnesium could be considered as an osmotic type laxative, but it worked only one time. Maybe my bowel obtained an "immunity" to magnesium, so it does not work on me anymore, to cause a peristalsis effect.
Generally I do a super healthy lifestyle with tea, healthy foods and no alcohol and smoking.
Any ideas what is going on with me ? Anxious thoughts in the past could send me for a BM instantly, but now is not working.
I feel so dissapointed ... I eat a lot and a day without a BM causes me discomfort, therefore a mood to do nothing.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Hi,
Did you know that too much fibre can have the opposite effect of too little.
I have IBS and have had to adjust my diet significantly.
I know for a fact with me that too much fibre causes constipation. Try leaving of all laxatives and increase your fruit/veg intake. One thing I found most helpful were Figs, dried or fresh, just two in the a.m and two in the p.m, also prune juice.
Another helpful thing for me were ORTIS FRUIT CUBES, you can buy them in the health-shop where I live.
They are totally natural and contain, dates, figs and other fruits.
I wish you well,

Solofelix.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Thanks for your post. Figs season has passed, so I can only find them dried. Unfortunately, I can't find prune juice in my country (Greece) unless I make a special order from bio-products in the internet. About fiber, I am in normal levels, about 20gr per day. I heard that 40gr is the recommended intake.
Do you think that small meals throughout the day combined with yogurt will help with the urge matter ?

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

It is true too much fiber can not be good. Recommended 25-35grams daily with at least
64oz of water I drink a lot more. I have IBS with constipation so I understand your frustration and also never felt an urge. After multiple tests found out it is caused by and overgrowth of bacteria in my small bowel. This is now being treated with antibotics and then a specific diet which actually does not include yogurt or other dairy to just name a few. They have found bacterial overgrowth in people with IBS-D also and do the same treatment. Wondering if this could be your problem. The test for it is a hydrogen breath test. Just a thought. I also do miralax every night a product we have here and I am able to go every day.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Maybe that's my problem. 2,5 days passed and still nothing and I'm in extreme discomfort. I have weak urges which are lost after I enter the bathroom. My intestines are fooling me ??
I drunk magnesium carbonate, 2 glasses of water,3 drid prunes, ate tomato and bread with lots of olive oil. I can feel my bowel converting the stools into loose stools (magnesium is passing water into intestine), but nothing. I can't have a BM
I also have a shy colon and this makes things worse. If I manage to get a strong urge and hear someone coming to bathroom or a place near it, that's it, I lost the urge.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I truly empathize with you. It sounds like your anxiety is not helping the situation. You might need to try a multiple prong approach, a healthy fiber diet (research this online for appropriate amount as well as foods), plenty of water, exercise and relax. Allow yourself privacy and time to make a BM every day. You need to try this regimen for at least a week or longer, don't give up. You might have to try a suppository to just get things started the first few times. Please see a doctor is you are still having problems. No need to suffer. My physician believes bowel problems are curable and we should not have to suffer.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Hi! So sorry to hear about whats going on. I think you should really go see a specialist! I had a similar problem. After lots of tests and a colonoscopy they saw lots of twisting in my colon. It was decided to take out some of my colon. Once they got in there, past the twisting they found a tumor and 12 polyps. Im not saying you have this lol but without tests you never know and dont want to let it get out of control. toxins are harmful to your body and not having BM's lets off toxins into your body after awhile. let us know what you find out!!!

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I don't feel any pain, I just feel discomfort for the next hour thanks to the weak urge which moves "the stuff" a bit but can't go out.
Maybe I should try some milk of magnesia to cleanse the colon ?
I forgot to mention that I was working in a hotel for the summer season, and I was using one empty hotel room for its bathroom (due to some technical problems it was not used by tourists). I am afraid that my colon was used to this room. When I was entering that room, a strong urge was coming immediately. Maybe that's the problem, that I don't have access in this room anymore as I stopped working there. Psychological reasons.

I have had problems with bowels for many years numerous tests but nothing sinister. Attended homeopath who suggested brown flaxseed this has to be ground to have full affect You must drink plenty when you take this. Providing it is just a lazy colon or even psycological I think you should have good results. Cant help to give it a go on the plus side it is a natural food. I take it every day in the morning and have had no problems for 19 months now. Previous to this it was nothing for me to go for weeks and I mean weeks without going the loo good luck. Let me know if it works for you

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Yeah, I have heard about this magic seed called flax seed. But I don't know if fiber is my problem. Fiber can help the intestine, but it does not stimulate (strong) peristalsis which is my problem.
I'm close to 3 days without a BM. The problem seems to getting worse.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Use a suppository! They work wonders. I have the exact same problem going on and I have not found a cure yet. My doc just tells me to take Miralax which I hate. Not enough of it and it does not work. He then tells me to use more and then I have no urges to go, but accidents when I sneeze. I need to go to a specialist but right now I use a suppository when it gets really bad.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Yeah, I heard that suppository are very effective. I tried milk of magnesia yesterday, ~55ml and 3 hours later I had an extreme diarrhea attack. I thought that was the end, but today I had one diarrhea strike and there are more to come. I hope that after that cleanse, the colon will find its rhythm again.
P.S MOM without taste is awful.

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

Stefa191: I'm sorry to hear about your discomfort. The stomache is the center of your immune system. I would go and get checked out as well, as one poster recommended. Have you ever been checked for Celiac Disease? If not, get checked. Celiac disease is when your small intestine can't process gluten. Do you eat a lot of bread, coldcuts, processed foods? If so, they're loaded with wheat and gluten. Take another look at your diet. Do you eat Bananas, rice, apples and toast (bread). That's the BRAT diet. It's very binding. I find that if I eat a bunch of nuts and raisins before I go to bed that that will help me MOVE easier in the a.m. Increase your P fruits. P=POOP!!! Peaches, pineapple, pears, etc. Do you drink a lot of caffeine? If so, caffeine reduces magnesium in your body. What about fish? Salmon is a good source of magnesium as well. Dark chocolate and green veggies are also good sources. Don't let it get backed up. You need to keep things running there so you don't end up with more serious issues as you age. There are other things you could ask to be tested for as well. Chrone's disease, diverticulitis, and a whole list of other stomache related issues. Another thing that could help you go is beets. Then you can see how long it takes you to go because your poop will be red from the beet juice. Good luck and let us know how 'you're going'!!!

Re: No urge for daily bowel movement

I keep reading all the posts and every one tells you do something different, so by now you have to be very confused. You have to find out what is causing your problem, (biology, physiology, diet, anxiety, etc.) every one is different. Until you get to the root cause all these suggestions are only going to be band aide fixes and will not cure the problem. First and foremost you need to find a GI doctor who specializes in motility issues to figure out what is going on and how to cure it. After years of constipation I found that Doctor and with the appropriate tests which led to the appropriate medical procedures I can now make a bowel movement with ease. And I don't have to rely on any of the suggestions that the others have posted. My body just does what it is supposed to do. The only help I give is Miralax at night but will wean myself off of this too. It is unbelievable but it did take the right doctor to find the underlying cause and then the appropriate treatment. Best of Luck
