no bowel movement for years

My wife has not had a bowel to her recollection for over 4 years and she has not shared this with me because of embarrassement. I found someone on here in my web searching that had the same problem for over 8 years. some have said impossible and to those people please dont respond because your speaking from lack of true knowledge and need someone who is versed in this area. While few this is a REAL problem from my readings Dr.s dont have a clue or write it off as improper diet. This may be something unstudied I am not sure does anyone have ideas? We are going to try an olive oil remedy because if there is anything in the intestine I would think it would have to be very hard and needs lubrication, people have said enymas have not helped or laxatives or that drink one takes before a colon check up. I look forward to discussion

Re: no bowel movement for years

Sorry to hear this but what happens to her waste products? The stomach, liver, pancrease all have a job to do, to break down the food products and eliminate the rest. Has she ever been scoped? If not, that is where I would start. I believe if she had an impaction of fecal matter, she would feel pain and would be vomiting. This is interesting and if you said it is happening to another person, I believe you. There are just so many questions. When some people are very constipated, I believe surgery is the answer. Good luck and keep us informed so that we may learn from this experience. Linda

Re: no bowel movement for years

The guru of bowel movements is Dr Richard Schulze who has some innovatative reasoning on why we don't have bm's and what can be done about it. But like NJLinda mentioned, all of that waste has to be going somewhere, and that is kind of scary to think where it may be going.
The thing is too that what works for one person doesn't work for another, so you may have results where others have not. But going to a doctor and getting testing is vital, since this is nothing to mess around with. Tell her not to be embarrassed, this is very dangerous and needs to be checked out ASAP.
Best wishes, K.

Re: no bowel movement for years

I have not had a bowel movement either for 3 years...soon to be 4 yrs! I have had a defogram, a manomagran, MRI's, x-rays, ultrasounds. One doctor said it was a rectocele another said "no sign of a rectocele". The test results read no evidence of a rectocele. It is very confusing and discouraging to go to so many doctors and no one agrees. One doctor said it was because of stenosis in my spine and wanted me to have surgery on L4, L5 and S1, but when I went for 2nd opinions,I opted out because he could not reassure me that the problem would be solved. Does your girlfriend need to get the stools out digitally? This is my only recourse! Laxatives only make the stool like peanut butter and harder to remove because there is nothing to latch onto! The peristaltic movement must be lacking!? I was wondering...we were not born with it so something has happened inbetween. Has she ever had a baby? I have heard that child birth can weaken the pelvic floor. or,has she suffered a mental trauma? Does she have pain in her spine or hip? Some women have weak pelvic muscles. I was wondering if she can strengthen these? I have not had luck but am still trying. A Hula Hoop is a fun way to strenghten abdominal and core muscles, but i have pain in hip as well so it is difficult. Some say it can be caused from a trauma/emotional. I am trying to ask if there are any similarities we can compare! Pantothenic Acid/Vitamin B-5, helps with peristaltic action in the colon. Maybe that would help? I am trying it as well as Magnesium which seems to get the stool moving but no luck so far in it coming out by itself. :>( I have also heard of many others with this problem, young and old. I was always very regular at 3 x a day and then one day...nothing,nothing,nothing! Some have had rectoceles removed and given a mesh, but the meshs are known to cause infections and some people say it is even harder to go to the bathroom which I cannot even imagine! I even had colonics, but they did not work. One time out of 11 colonics! She told me she had never seen this before where it didn't work. I hope we all find an answer. I have spent too much money already trying to ask doctors who seem to think it is related to constipation. No, it is much more than that.

Re: no bowel movement for years

Thank you for responding, my wife was successful in acheiveing a bowel by using a olive oil method. I used this in the past successfully for gall stones and was amazing. I have not seen any mention of this and feel important to sharewith others I plan to post this and hopefully help what seems like mostly women. I hope you try this, I went to "ask a Dr." and the GI specialist did not believe me. it seems like this is the normal response for them because it does defy all logic but if more and more women are experiencing this there has to be something to it.

Re: no bowel movement for years

It sounds to me like she has bowel movements, meaning the feces do come out eventually. From your post it sounds like she hasn't passed feces in 4 years, which would make her dead by now. She just has DIFFICULTY getting the feces out. VERY different from not having a bowel movement. She should at least check out if she has a rectocele or a rectal prolapse. Don't tell the dr. that she hasn't had ANY bowel movements, tell the dr. that she has difficulty getting it out. Otherwise you will be met with disbelief that it isn't possible. Use the correct terminology to get the correct help! I wish her good luck, the first step is to visit a colon rectal dr.

4needsomehelp - I saw a woman on TV who had a similar problem to yours for 16 years. She also had to remove the feces with her fingers. She had a rectal prolapse. This was fixed (operation) and she was fine. I hope you find out what the problem is.

Re: no bowel movement for years

babygirl: No I spoke correctly it just seems to be something very hard to believe and I understand why because I thought the same thing untill I started to investigate. And I think thats what needs to be done more on this subject people dont understand so they dont believe it is possible we need to investigate. I did limited research (lack of knowing how to search) and have found this to be "a real" thing with other women. Because we dont know how doesn't mean it is not real. I find it hard to believe that women from all over the world (I have found have encountered the same problem) just made this up. Please understand that the numbers are few which makes this all the scarier because there seems to be little knowledge about this.

Re: no bowel movement for years

Glad she had some relief. Is there any chance she has a fistula? That is an abnormal opening from the body where stuff (like feces) comes out. It could be near her intestines, colon or anal areas. If feces were to just stay in her bowels, she would have gone septic and all that stuff would going into her blood stream. Does she vomit a lot? Tell her please not to be embarrassed if she wants an answer to this problem. Good luck

Re: no bowel movement for years

Thank you so much for the comments and suggestions this site is very helpful. We have not had a professional diagnosis simply because all that I have read the Dr's. have no idea and since we do not have insurance it would be expensive to play the guinea pig thing. By what some ladies who have had insurance say it is either not believed or mis diagnosed. It is a mystery as to what is happening but the olive oil treatment worked and "no one" has suggested that on this site so I hope those that are having problems give this a try. Because all are trying laxatives and that could be harsh but the olive oil acts as a lubricant and that could aid in a successful BM.

Re: no bowel movement for years

[What??? Olive Oil worked? And, she has not had a bowel movement in years? Please tell me what you and she did! How much olive oil did she take? Was it mixed or plain, or what? Did her bowel movement come on strong? Do you need to stay home a day or did she take it in the evening and it worked in the morning! This is wonderful, wonderful news! And, is she having normal bowel movements now? I have only heard bad reports of surgeries done for people with no bm's and I do not want surgery on my back or to have anything done until I have exhausted every other avenue...but have not heard of this! I have heard of olive oil for constipationbut did not know it would work for this!!! I thought it was some kind of obstruction. You guys are angels!!! Pleasel explain what and how much and what time of day is best to take it so I don't have to go while I'm at work Thank You So Much!!!FONT="Lucida Console"][/FONT]

Re: no bowel movement for years

Baby Girl, Thank you for including me! I did ask a Dr. if it was possible that I had a rectal prolapse that was causing this and he laughed at me and said no, that isn't the problem. But, he did not offer me anything. I have been to so many doctors and now I am left with no faith in them! They led me from one to another and many tests and mri's were taken. I think they were just all filling their pockets and left me dangling. I had injections in the sacrum to "free the nerves" and I even had a hysterectomy and a bladder suspension to see if that would work. Then they wanted to operate on my back and give me spinal fusion. Everyone wants to try something and nothing has worked. I feel like nothing more than a source of making money for them. I'll look up rectal prolapse again and check it as it has been nearly 4 years now since my "gamut" (sp) with them. I do not want to go to another dr. until I can find one I can trust...in the meantime, I had been going to Chiro's and Kinesiologist thinking my spine was the problem and muscles were so tight they were mucking up my spine...misaligning it. And they gave me their pills but nothing so far. I will retry rectal prolapse and I am very interested in the olive oil too. Anything that has helped someone else I am willing-more than!- to try!

Re: no bowel movement for years

You do need to take the day off just in case. The day before stop eating noon and around 6:30 no more water at 7pm take about a shot of plain virgin olive oil and can follow with half a shot of lemon juice, if you can take more olive oil at once take about a double shot with one shot lemon juice every 15 - 20 minutes take up to 8 shots of olive oil and then go to bed try to relax lay inclined on bed if that helps relieve discomfort try not to vomit as you may get the desire a shot of pineapple juice might help and just wait. I pray this helps you, it may be like diarreha but anywhere from 2 am to 6 am you should have a bowel. Good luck let us know.

Re: no bowel movement for years

I understand your being nervous but if it helps I did consult with a GI Doctor on the "ask a Dr" site and he never gave an objection to this attempt. Also the only reason you may get the urge to vomit is because of the oily taste. It actually is quickly calmed by a small drink of pinapple juice I truly hope you are successful. We will include you in our prayers
