8 weeks of diarrhea and counting, help!

Hello,

I am at my wits end and looking for advice. I started having diarrhea before christmas time and assumed it was a bug going around so I was going to wait it out. I didn't really have any other symptoms either, occasionally some stomach cramping. 4 weeks and 10 lost pounds later I made an appointment with the local GI specialist who said 4 weeks is kind of on the verge between what the medical field calls acute or chronic diarrhea so he prescribed some medications and ordered a bunch of stool and blood tests and told me to come back in two weeks. Taking any anti diarrheal meds proved to make things worst, it just post poned the inevitable and then when the diarrhea returned the stomach cramping was unbearable.

So I stuck it out for those two weeks and returned to the doctor who reported that all my stool and blood tests were normal except slightly elevated inflammatory markers but very non specific. So we scheduled both a colonoscopy and an EGD, which the doctor reported looked normal but he took biopsies. I just recieved word that my biopsies were all normal. I was informed that the doctor thinks my problem may be postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome, meaning I could've had and infection and now it's gone but my bowels haven't returned to normal yet.

At this point in time my diarrhea and stomach cramping is absolutely horrible and I've lost 20lbs. The doctor had told me that if my symptoms continue they can order a 48 hour quantitive stool collection for further investigation. I don't know what the think they'll find when everything so far has been normal.

I guess I'd just like to know if anyone has been through something like this before. Any suggestions? Any advice?

Thanks!

Re: 8 weeks of diarrhea and counting, help!

I can only tell you my experiance, I had diareah from December of 2010 until november of 2012 before my doctor got me onto medication that helped (Lomotil) durring that time even going to the grocery store was dangerous, I needed to know where every bathroom was and how to get there quickly. I would get cramps and my bowels would basically want to release so I became an expert at butt clenching and waddling to the bathroom. Durring that time and to this date I have lost over 100lbs.

My diagnosis as of this date is IBS. But back when I was originally diagnosed I was told it was a mistake that I had Crohn's disease.

I can't tell you what to do but I can suggest you get on your doctor's back about a diagnosis and any tests that can be done to find out what is going on with you.
