I poop only once every 2-3 weeks - help!

Please help me. I am only able to pass a small (6cm long by 2cm wide) soft stool every 2-3 weeks. I eat a very healthy diet, take plenty of fibre as well as medication prescribed to me by my GP. Stools are always soft, but I always bleed and feel as if my rectum is being torn apart. I recently had an xray taken of my chest area and it showed my bowel as completely full of waste. I am currently under the care of a bowel specialist but am only being seen by him every 3 months or so and they are not sure what the problem is. In the meantime I have to manage the constant feeling of tiredness, bloating and chest pains due to the pressure on my organs. This waste that I am unable to pass is also now putting pressure on my bladder, causing additional problems in this area. I know I have a problem and want to know if anyone else out there has experienced anything like this or can tell me how long is too long to wait to pass my stools. It is as if a portion of my bowel is paralysed and is unable to pass anything once it gets to this point, resulting in everything I eat backing up and up. When I do finally have a blow movement, it is no where near the the amount of what I am consuming on a daily basis.

Please help me, I am very worried, in near-constant pain and scared. I want my life back.

Hi! I normally post in Endocrine, but I've had 8 bowel surgeries. I don't want to scare you, but you should be seeing a GI more regularly. You need to have a sits marker test and defacography. I was diagnosed with colonic inertia and had constipation as number one symptom. I was unable to pass much of anything, but its worth reading about and seeing if you think you may have more of the symptoms. I was diagnosed in 2007 and had been misdiagnosed for 7 years, but the two tests mentioned are the diagnostic tools.

I have had similar difficulty.First: My G.I. Doctor recommended using a rectal suppository 1 every 6 to 12 hours to remove the lower collection of material.
Next, either an oral laxative which in some cases may cause some discomfort because I am sensitive to purging laxatives and cathartics which really go through the G.I. Tract producing a lot of water to wash the entire tract.

I would like to suggest you get an abdominal CT scan along with a colonoscopy exam and ask to see the results of all. With all the material being seen in your chest ex-ray it sounds like you and I both have what appears to be a tear somewhere in the intestinal area that is pushing this material out under pressuer into the abdominal area. At this time, I am experiencing great discomfort in my mid section along with intermittent spasm episodes that all disappear when I get to the Emer. room
I hope you get some relief soon.Take care!

You may have what is called megacolon or Hirschsprungs disease. It is exactly what you described-an area of colon that has absence of nerve fibers to make the colon muscles move. It is a congenital problem though so I would expect a history of constipation going back to infancy. The treatment is surgical removal of that section of bowel, and connecting the functioning ends together. It can be diagnosed with a barium enema. The 2 previously entioned tests may be helpful as well. Do you have neuropathy of any type? Neuropathy, such as that caused by Vit B12 or folate deficiency can affect the bowel and cause severe constipation. So can hypothyroidism and certain medications if this is a more recent development. It might be worth getting the thyroid levels and vitamin levels checked in the blood.
