| Re: Diffuse Axonal Brain Injury
My fiance sustained a diffuse axonal brain injury in May 2010. He too was in a drug induced coma for 3 days but when they withdrew the medication, he did not wake up. I was told by the doctors that was all he would ever be. He remaiined in a coma until November when he slowly began to emerge. He is now awake, alert and aware but is nonverbal and has no means of communication that anyone other than me would likely understand. He continues to make small improvements. But there are many, many stories out there of people who have experienced different levels of recovery. The truth is, there is no one who can predict what the outcome will be. The best you can do is continue to love and support your friend. Play his favorite music. Treat him as if he can hear every word you say. I refused (and still do) to allow him to be surrounded by any negativity. Talk to him about things he enjoys doing. Most importantly, stay hopeful!
