Arachnoid cyst

My wife is 9 months pregnant and during a routine u/s at 8 months, doctors
have found 4 arachnoid cysts measuring 1.7cm and 2.3 * 1.3cm near left
ventricle. An MRI was done and found that the underlying brain tissue appear
normal and there were no other abnormalities. We also met a neurologist and
he said the cysts were not small and he doesn't know what effects the baby
will have. Does anyone know if the cysts grows over time and what are
possible effects for the baby. Do all people who have arachnoid cysts have
seizures, headaches, delayed development etc., ? We are so afraid and
very confused... Please help..
Thanks..

Re: Arachnoid cyst

Hi,

I have not had personal experinece of this but my friends two children both had cysts on their brain that were detected at the 20 week mark. As you are likely aware these are sometimes markers for other possible disorders (downs being one of several). They were told that the cysts should disappear before birth and at follow up u/s scans they had done just that. Both children (girls) were normal with no problems and are now 3 and 5 years old.

Good Luck, hopefully you will get a referal to a neuro who specialises in pedeatrics.

Re: Arachnoid cyst

hello from Belgium
I know what you are going through. My baby was due sept. 20th 2003. On juin 30th 2003 I was told i had placenta praevia and on the echo, the doctor noticed a large
black spot (2cm)on the baby's skull. She was not sure what it was. So we went to see
a specialist. He "reassured" us and said it was probably harmless. Benjamin was born August 20th 2004 after caesarian (I had a bleeding due to placenta praevia) Benjamin was 2.400 grams. Good weight but he couldn't breathe properly, so had to go to intensive neonatal care. After 14 days we could go home. Benjamin is a very healthy baby and with 6 months we went to a renowned Belgian neurosurgeon. He had an MRI
done and he said it was an arachnoid cyst and that it would most probably cause no problems in the future. Probably your baby is born by now and I hope (s)he is as healthy as our son who's nearly 1 year . You couldn't tell he has been premature. He will start to walk very soon and he's a very happy baby. I wish you the best of luck and please please try not to worry. It's difficult. I know.

Re: Arachnoid cyst

I have one. HUGE! and I am normal so I would not worry to much. Neuro. told me that kids get them and that usually the brain can form around them.
