constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

I'm 33. I've been dizzy since I was 16. I always feel off balance and sometimes it feels like I am wearing a helmet and there is pressure on the inside of my head and ears. I have no pain at all, no headaches, no spinning sensation. I now self medicate with alcohol every night, alone. It is sadly the only time of the day that I feel good. =/

I went to a doctor once when I was 18 and he just blew it off and gave me some anti-dizzy medication that did nothing. Ever since then I have just learned to live with it and usually convince myself that its my fault due to not being able to handle stress, or a bad day, or not enough sleep. I smoked some pot and did some acid as a teenager so I blame it on that as well.

I think the main reason that I haven't been to a doctor in years about it is because I keep toggling with the thought that its just mental. When it first started it caused anxiety attacks because it scared the ***** out of me. Once again, I blamed myself and figured it was just my personality or something. I no longer have anxiety from it because I'm so use to it.

I have now decided that it is NOT mental and I am done with trying to keep myself in mental states to "ignore" or "overcome" it.

Out of the week I am lucky if I feel good one day. I am always tired and feel like I have no energy. But somehow, I am able to hold a professional job, I have a bachelor's degree in physics, and I work out 4 days a week. Some weeks are better than others. Sometimes I feel great and think its over and forget about it. But it always comes back. Its like it goes in cycles from so-so to really bad. Its never totally gone. I get really light headed in the gym as well. But I work out anyways.

I had horrible ear infections as young kid. I had tubes put in my ears about 4 times. I also have always had bad hay fever allergies; you know, itchy eyes, runny nose and lots of sneezing.

I am hoping that it is simply some sort of inner ear problem that can be fixed.

My health insurance kicks in very soon so I plan on seeing a doctor about it finally. I know I am an idiot for letting it go on so long but I have always been afraid docs would say I was crazy. I am to the point where I don't care what they say, I just want an answer.

What are your thoughts guys?

Look up symptoms of Chiari Malformation...........on the web..........my sister had same symptoms but also had headaches and could not bend over with her head down........she passed out.........it is a genetic thing and can be fixed with surgery, which she had last year. doctors didn't figure it out for 2 years. her ear nose and throat doctor knew the minute he saw her MRI!!!! Now she is feeling great!!!!!!!!!!!

Thumbs up Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

Best wishes on finding out what it is. I am so glad you are going to a doctor. But even if it does turn out to be 'in your head', most mental issues are actually physical, chemical issues so do not rule them out as less meaningful or necessary to fix.

Ya know, maybe it is chronic depression. Like today, I felt tired and off balance all day at work. A. I did not get enough sleep last night(only 5 hours), B. When I came home I decided that tonight I would go to bed early and then boom, I started feeling pretty normal again. As if the idea that I will feel better tomorrow somehow made me feel better NOW.

I DO think that I have some balance issues due to my ear problems as a kid, but I doubt it is nearly as bad as I make it out to be. I'm wondering if I should try some anti-depressants.

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

I have the same problems as you. I have had them for over 4 years. I was told it was all "mental" and I don't buy it! I have been to two psychologists and they both said that I do suffer from anxiety, but there is something phyical going on. And until that is corrected, my anxiety won't get any better. I have also tried anti-anxiety meds too, and they don't help my head symptoms. I have been to so many specialists and no one can (or won't try to) figure it out. I'm starting to lose hope. I'm afraid I'm going to have to live the rest of my life like this! I would elaborate more, but I'm having a really bad day with the head symptoms and it is torture just to try to type this. I hope you can get some answers and feel better soon!

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

Don't feel alone I too suffer from very similiar symptoms.I've been to many doctors.I have hade 2 Ct scans,MRI of c-spine and head with contrast, and much blood work and urine samples. All look normal to docs.My ER bills are extreme . The anxiety and 8 mounth symptoms of motion sickness, off balance, nausea, some tingly sensations(not pins and needles) ,fatigue and a awfully weird sensation in my nose sinuses are frustrating.I wish I could feel human again.Walking down the street to the library store or to get the mail can be a brain fog dizzy nightmare on some days or moments.I'm only 26 to be dealing with this Mikesnow and Leela c but seeing people with almost exact symptoms is helpful in dealing with my anxietys.I took feel very compelled to research and never stop fighting for diagnosis and some releaf from these symptoms.

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

I felt great today! I was very focused at work and turning my head quickly wasn't much of a problem like it usually is. This leads me to believe that getting enough sleep definitely alleviates some of my symptoms. I think that I MUST have at least 8 hours sleep to function at 90%. I know for a fact that I grind my teeth at night and wake up A LOT. I am wondering if its a sleep disorder.

Thats the thing, there are so many odd things that regulate the way I feel it is almost impossible to put a finger on the problem.

Sometimes I think its all mental and other times I think its physical. So, I can't figure out if its mental issues that cause the physical or vice versa.

Maybe its both. Who knows... But I will figure out a way to "fix" my problem if it means going to extreme measures to do so. I refuse to live miserably. I didn't ask to be here, so why should I?grdrgdgd

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

After seeing your Primary doc you may want to consider seeing a Neurologist about this and see what he can find from his/her standpoint. You may also want to see an Allergist and get a basic allergy tests done to see if you have any allergies that might be causing your symptoms.

I have been like this for OVER 4 YEARS!!!! I have had every test you can possibly think of. I'm not trying to scare you, but I just want to let you know that I have been suffering with this constant lightheadedness for a long time. It went away for a few months last year, but came back with a vengeance in January. Hopefully you will be able to feel better so you don't have to suffer with this for long. It does make you crazy. Trust me, I know!

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

Hi. I have had Chiari Malformation and had the surgery for it. My initial symptom was dizziness 24/7. Ativan helps relieve it enough to work. Unfortunately the decompression surgery did not help that part. There are dozens of symptoms with Chiari which can only be confirmed with an MRI, which you should have done. Also go to a really good ENT doctor. See a good Neurologist. If he or she isn't helping, find another one. I've learned with Chiari to find doctors willing to work with you and doctors that care. That's half the battle.

Re: constant dizziness, pressure inside head, and fatigue

hi- check out BPPV as well. My husband has it. He was in the hospital last summer for 3 days and still is not right. There is info on the web about it. An ENT dr told him that it would go away eventually but it is driving him crazy. I have also heard there are exercises that can help train your brain to adjust to the BPPV problem. Good luck!
