Everything turns upside down

So, for the past 6 years out of no where, sometimes I can tell if it's coming not that that helps, everything feels like it gets turn upside down. I feel like the sky is down and the land is up and I have to hold on for dear life or I will fall down into the sky! The worst which scares me more than anything is while I'm driving. If I'm going over a bridge or I can't see land it feels like I'm driving in the sky upside down on the underside of a bridge. If it occurs indoors I grab a wall or chair or my girlfriend (she's used to it now) it can happen in mid sentance while conversating and it's very embarassing because i loose track completely what I'm talking about usually just stop talking. My friends say stuff like, "oh it's just all in your head." and I say EXACTLY it's not in my arm! anyone know what I'm talking about. I'm beginning to wonder if it's more that psychological and perhaps medical. I've read similar post but not exactly like what I have.

my remedy when possible is close my eyes and let it pass.

this is also posted in Ear Nose & throat. looking for answers from both...

Re: Everything turns upside down

Ack! I get the "spins" if I move my head suddenly from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, but that upside down vision must be impossible to manage. Have you seen a neurologist?? It could be migraine (even without a headache), damage from a stroke/TIA or even a purely visual problem.

Meniere's disease has similar "attacks" but I'm guessing it would have progressed to at least some hearing loss by now. (I don't know that much about it though) http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/balance/meniere.asp

An Otoneurologist is a neurologist with special training in vestibular disorders (dizziness and balance disorders).

Re: Everything turns upside down

Thank you for the reply I'm setting some appointments today actually since I have the day off. Perhaps I'll post what I find out. FYI very hard to manage is right just happened the other day while drive home and I had to yell out loud to stay focused and barely look at the road mostly steering wheel. yikes!

Re: Everything turns upside down

I know this is not just "in your head"....I am having same episodes and right now feel I am on my own trying to find out what is causing it--trying to find dr that has heard of it.....I have searched the internet and have found "room tilt illusion" is rare (upside down vision with illusion even moreso).....I found a partial article from a Neuro Othomologist, a group had done a study on this,....of a few people.....and they found a few had lesions on their brain stem, another vestibular dysfunction and some infarcts on brainstem....I googled for history of upside down vision and found a few other partial articles......another group of drs had 12 people altogether and they pretty much came up with same........it was interesting that most of these articles came from medical journals out of Europe......I have long history of vertigo/Meniere's (which is burning out and vertigo much better) and Ocular Migraine but this is very different....it hits me out of the blue, lasts mybe 15seconds, I am not dizzy/nauseous before or after, a little weak when over......I mainly want to find out if this is something I am gonna have to live with bcu I am not driving bcu of it.....when it happens, all I can see is the illusion.....my neurologist doesn't know who to send me to, my daughter's internists said she didn't have a clue BUT I did call a friend who has Meniere's/Vertigo and just asked her if she ever experienced anything like this...she said "no", but remembered when she was a young girl her mother would start screaming and say the room was upside down, the room was upside down and she was gonna fall into a black hole and it didn't last long......I am told by Radiologist if you have lesion on Brain Stem it doesn't always show on MRI nor Cat Scan...Right now I am thinking of going to Neuro Opthomologist in Atlanta. I am new on this board and hope I can get back to you if I find anything helpful......I am positive I am not having panic attacks.....keep up the good fight.

Re: Everything turns upside down

really sucks i can imagine.. i have the same.. as well as constant dizzyness aswell. makes hard to drive make hard to do a lot of things.. luckly i get short spells of vertigo that pass but on a few occassions i found it to last hours- i have always associated it with some sort of digestive disease. i really dont think its an inner ear deal.. though it has responded to valium - hmmm would suggest inner ear - does nt .. well if its neuro to the digestive tract.... it could benifit by the same treatemnt anyhow try some valium and i mean 2.5 mg.. dont need mnuch to hedge this off - try it let me know how it goes

I wanted to ask you a question re: your "upside down vision"....does something happen in your head (mine is a pretty bad feeling, can't call it dizzy--not painful) for few seconds before you have the illusion of being upside down? I couldn't tell from your post....first time it happened to me we were eating at a resturant with friends and my friend thought I was having a seizure (I wasn't) but something unpleasant does happen in my head that I feel.......I am so glad I found you....I knew it wasn't a hallucination.....bcu images come into our brain upside down, I have wondered if that part of the brain/whatever could not be working just right....the human body is so complex and the brain so interesting....much success on your venture...anniemom

Re: Everything turns upside down

Wow yeah I'd really like to know more about whats going on with you AnnieMom! I'll try and respond as clearly as possible as I have only a few minutes. So. I myself have begun the process of seeing docs. They are ruling out the heart first and then diabetes then they want to go to the head. Uhg! Its frustrating. I don't think anyone knows what they are talking about. I think I'm getting a secret psych screening first, meaning I think they think I'm crazy and want to rule that out first!

So. I actually haven't been to the doctors in a bit. I was laid off recently and now I don't have insurance which means this is going to have to wait. The story of your friends mom sounds just like me. it made me laugh to think about it. I know it sounds so stupid to people who don't have a clue what I'm talking about but it's very comforting to hear of similar experiences. I know someday this will be explained by someone who knows exaclty what going on here. It's too bizarre!

please everyone i'll repost as soon as I get more time. I would like to respond more thoroughly. I would like to hear more about other peoples symptoms because I'm not so sure about migrains and my doctor tried everything to reproduce vertigo to no avail. so I don't think I even have vertigo. The stones in my ears seem to be fine. I can't see this being anxiety strictly although I believe anxiety has become a more common part of my life as I just anticipate this when approaching bridges or tunnels. TUNNELS THEE WORST am i on the ceiling or the road??? won't know until I can see outside on the other end...

Re: Everything turns upside down

Very Dizzy- You are much more interesting than I am but I wil try to do a little bio....6 yrs sorta proves it is not immediately life threatening.
3 plus yrs ago I had first in a very relaxed situation...had those feelings in my head for few seconds and then, what I can see is just "white" for an instant, then room looks upside down, the floor being the ceiling and I was "up there" feeling like I was gonna fall into this black hole...bcu of my age and never experiencing anything like that, decided I should go to ER.....they found small stroke...neurologist told me that my symptoms didn't match where the stroke was but there it was.
3 yrs later, sitting at my puter, I had those feelings in my head....boy, I grabbed handles of my chair and held on for dear life and again the room turned upside down....the difference was when I had MRI, no stroke showed and my neurologist reminded me of what she had said.
A month later "something" similar happened again and it caught me walking but was able to grab a doorway and I jerked all over....this time it did not effect my vision but am somewhat weak/unstable walking for rest of day...........
After the first episode, at some pt in time, for another problem, I was sent to Emory to a movement disorder specialist and was put thru so many tests, there are no more tests my neurologist could order.
I do have a very small artery in back of my head (they are sure I was born with it) and a crooked artery and will have angiogram of brain July 6th.....I can tell you are much younger than me. I will try my best to stay in touch and give you any info I find out....in the meantime, stay out of those tunnels, anniemom....oh, re: my friend's mom, that happened over 50 yrs ago so we know it has been going on for long time and from all I know/read, episode only lasts seconds, not minutes.

Re: Everything turns upside down

Update To Very Dizzy -I have found more info..... Maybe I will diagnose your case before I get mine done...first, the fact that you have been having these for 6 yrs probably rules out some more serious possibilities....the fact the dr you went to couldn't cause you to have vertigo is interesting......don't know if I mentioned that my neuro thinks I have regular migraines (knew I had ocular--silent), but I don't have pain, BUT I finally googled "Can a migraine cause upside down vision" and YES, a migraine with aura can and you don't have to have bad headaches to be having regular migraines that cause problems otherwise even tho people do......Dizzy, an interesting article mentioning they have recorded upside vision for 200 yrs but rare....the 2 patients in article are different from me that theirs last minutes rather than seconds...am taking this article to my neuro as she has never heard of this kind of episode....read abt migraines. I've learned a lot since last post and have to say it would explain a lot of weird feelings I have had over the yrs......I very well could have the inner ear problem and migraines w/o the pain....if I live long enuf, maybe I can hang out my shingle and I will see you free of charge.....anniemom

Re: Everything turns upside down

How did you break the rules? I've never posted on message boards before so I wouldn't have caught it. I really appreciate all of your input, I wonder if I am a migrain sufferer. I've never thought of that before.

I suppose I can't say mine last for minutes. Like. Its not like my vision gets stuck upside down. However the sensation can last for many minutes after the initial occurance. I've been thinking lately about the connection between the eye and the brain. My doctor shrugged off any possible damage to the brain. My history of head injuries is significant enough that I feel as though that could be a possibility. i was sort of reading about PCS post-concussion syndrome where in some case symtoms show up later oppose to directly after accidents. I've have a hand full of severe concussions and wonder if this could be connected. although I'm not sold. I was thinking the other day that perhaps the vision signal is not connecting correctly to the mind. Perhaps damage to the path could cause this? Isn't the eye basically a set of mirrors where image is refracted upsidedown once along the way anyway?

I do like the migrain idea that would comfort me. I also think about the fact that this has been going on so long and I haven't had an aneurysm yet is good. Good in the way that I can take comfort in knowing this is more of a matter of coping.

Keep in touch still. I would like to know more about your condition.

Re: Everything turns upside down

Very Dizzy, I broke the rules by mentioning the name of Web site even tho I didn't give site address......my "events" lasts seconds rather than minutes also.....I have found a new way to search.....I have a daughter who was diagnosed with MS (has been in remission for several yrs), ........my rehab person and my family dr both told me they thought I have vestibular problems.....like MS, you just have to keep ruling out similar symptoms to get to the right diagnosis....and I think between all the informative sites I am finding I certainly can judge quite a bit by the symptoms--sometimes when I get to the Dr and he/she asks me a ?, my brain just goes blank......I too would want a Dr to take head injuries a little more serious when listening to me......I do want to ask you a question I don't think you have answered......a few seconds before I have the upside down vision, I have a terrible feeling in the top of my head, similar to maybe a spasm (not what I would call dizzy)....do you? I am more concerned abt this...I think the upside down vision is the side effect of what is happening effecting that mechanism of the brain that takes the images coming into the brain upside down and turns the around (like you said)--maybe just temporarily turning them back around......one of my biggest problems from this is I am not driving and that limits my husband's freedom and if happens with me walking I am gonna fall....don't need that......it is wonderful to have so much info in one place.....anniemom

Re: Everything turns upside down

Very Dizzy, in trying to do this right and I do agree with having strict rules on boards, I reread the guidelines for posting and if I didn't read it wrong, I can mention a Dr.'s name and the city/state he lives in so I will do that and you can check him out.
