Everything turns upside down

So, for the past 6 years out of no where, sometimes I can tell if it's coming not that that helps, everything feels like it gets turn upside down. I feel like the sky is down and the land is up and I have to hold on for dear life or I will fall down into the sky! The worst which scares me more than anything is while I'm driving. If I'm going over a bridge or I can't see land it feels like I'm driving in the sky upside down on the underside of a bridge. If it occurs indoors I grab a wall or chair or my girlfriend (she's used to it now) it can happen in mid sentance while conversating and it's very embarassing because i loose track completely what I'm talking about usually just stop talking. My friends say stuff like, "oh it's just all in your head." and I say EXACTLY it's not in my arm! anyone know what I'm talking about. I'm beginning to wonder if it's more that psychological and perhaps medical. I've read similar post but not exactly like what I have.

my remedy when possible is close my eyes and let it pass.

this is also posted in Ear Nose & throat. looking for answers from both...

Re: Everything turns upside down

Ack! I get the "spins" if I move my head suddenly from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, but that upside down vision must be impossible to manage. Have you seen a neurologist?? It could be migraine (even without a headache), damage from a stroke/TIA or even a purely visual problem.

Meniere's disease has similar "attacks" but I'm guessing it would have progressed to at least some hearing loss by now. (I don't know that much about it though) http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/balance/meniere.asp

An Otoneurologist is a neurologist with special training in vestibular disorders (dizziness and balance disorders).

Re: Everything turns upside down

Thank you for the reply I'm setting some appointments today actually since I have the day off. Perhaps I'll post what I find out. FYI very hard to manage is right just happened the other day while drive home and I had to yell out loud to stay focused and barely look at the road mostly steering wheel. yikes!

Re: Everything turns upside down

I know this is not just "in your head"....I am having same episodes and right now feel I am on my own trying to find out what is causing it--trying to find dr that has heard of it.....I have searched the internet and have found "room tilt illusion" is rare (upside down vision with illusion even moreso).....I found a partial article from a Neuro Othomologist, a group had done a study on this,....of a few people.....and they found a few had lesions on their brain stem, another vestibular dysfunction and some infarcts on brainstem....I googled for history of upside down vision and found a few other partial articles......another group of drs had 12 people altogether and they pretty much came up with same........it was interesting that most of these articles came from medical journals out of Europe......I have long history of vertigo/Meniere's (which is burning out and vertigo much better) and Ocular Migraine but this is very different....it hits me out of the blue, lasts mybe 15seconds, I am not dizzy/nauseous before or after, a little weak when over......I mainly want to find out if this is something I am gonna have to live with bcu I am not driving bcu of it.....when it happens, all I can see is the illusion.....my neurologist doesn't know who to send me to, my daughter's internists said she didn't have a clue BUT I did call a friend who has Meniere's/Vertigo and just asked her if she ever experienced anything like this...she said "no", but remembered when she was a young girl her mother would start screaming and say the room was upside down, the room was upside down and she was gonna fall into a black hole and it didn't last long......I am told by Radiologist if you have lesion on Brain Stem it doesn't always show on MRI nor Cat Scan...Right now I am thinking of going to Neuro Opthomologist in Atlanta. I am new on this board and hope I can get back to you if I find anything helpful......I am positive I am not having panic attacks.....keep up the good fight.

Re: Everything turns upside down

really sucks i can imagine.. i have the same.. as well as constant dizzyness aswell. makes hard to drive make hard to do a lot of things.. luckly i get short spells of vertigo that pass but on a few occassions i found it to last hours- i have always associated it with some sort of digestive disease. i really dont think its an inner ear deal.. though it has responded to valium - hmmm would suggest inner ear - does nt .. well if its neuro to the digestive tract.... it could benifit by the same treatemnt anyhow try some valium and i mean 2.5 mg.. dont need mnuch to hedge this off - try it let me know how it goes
