Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

I am a 32 year old male and about 3 weeks ago I was sitting on my couch watching tv and for no apparent reason i suddenly became very light headed and nearly passed out. I went to the Urgent Care and they guessed it was an inner ear infection...have been to an ear doc and he says im fine

Since that night i have become more and more light headed, on a nearly constant basis. I feel like im drunk in a way but i dont do drugs and havent been drinking. When i sleep my limbs go numb and i wake up and have to shake them back to life.

Does anyone else have this? I saw some old posts describing EXACTLY what i feel but they closed a long time ago and no one ever reported a resolution...

I have had blood tests but they came back good except for high cholesterol, negative for diabetes.... this is really scary to say the least...

bsmith1220: You could have a pinched nerve. See if you can get to a neurologist and get examined. Make sure you're not having seizures.

Which limbs go numb? Is it your hands and arms? This does sound like it may be coming from your neck. A problem with the neck, can cause light headedness, and symptoms in the arms. I would also suggest seeing a neuro.

its both arms usually, sometimes just my hands. I have had a neck xray and a brain MRI so i will get those results today hopefully and post back with the result.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

Well no Brain Tumor on the MRI thank goodness and the xrays came back clean too. I do have some sleep apnea now, i wake up in the middle of the night from not breathing totally out of breath and feeling almost like i am going to pass out. It has been suggested that it is just stress, however i am skeptical of that. This feeling is 24/7, gets worse with exertion, i feel pressure in my head along with light headedness and dizziness. This is by far the worst experience i have ever had. I feel like i am dying.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

I would suggest seeing an internal med doc as they specialize in spotting symptoms and knowing what tests to do. Also, did the doc check the muscles in your neck and upper back manually? X-rays and MRI will not show a problem with the muscles. My tests also came out fine, yet I had severely strained muscles in my neck, causing light headedness, dizzy spells, and my hands also fall asleep in certain positions while I am sleeping. This is a major thing most docs do not think to check. I would have the doctor also check these areas manually.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

Yes I am currently seeing an internist, she has me on high blood pressure meds which i think may be why I am 'passing out' while i am asleep because my blood pressure is 140/85 to 160/95 which i dont think is high enough for meds. I am guessing that when i go to sleep my blood pressure is dropping too low from the meds which is making me numb and tingly all over.

Yes, the meds may be doing that. Could they be lowered? Sounds like you may want to start with this.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

Ya i stopped taking the meds but no change yet although it has only been one night. It sucks, as i start falling asleep i begin to get light headed and my limbs go numb so i get jolted awake. Did this all night last night so now on top of all this i am totally unrested. I have noticed that the tingling feelings actually begin later at night when i begin to get tired. Then they are come in full force when i actually go to bed.

It sounds like anxiety to me. Sometimes we are stressed and don't even realize it. You may also have sleep apnea. A sleep test would help with a diagnosis or dismissal. Try to relax (easier said than done ) and not worry too much.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

You know i am getting more and more receptive to the idea of it being stress/anxiety for the light headed/spacey/dizzy feelings during the day- hard to attribute to my limbs falling asleep though. What happens is as i start to drift off to sleep at night, i have a feeling of lightheadedness and my arms go numb. Then i will wake up a bit and take a deep breath and everything comes back. Then i start drifting off to sleep again and then again i get light headed like i am passing out and my arms go numb, not tingling, but numb. So i end up on the edge of sleep all night never really resting which i am sure makes things worse.

bsmith1220; See if you can take some Melatonin. It's a hormone that helps us sleep. It decreases as we age. You can get it at any drug store. I wish we had some easy answers for you. The next thing I'd suggest is a massage and even accupuncture.

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

The key may be "when I take a breath everything comes back". Perhaps you're actually unconciously holding your breath when you're falling asleep. A sleep study might solve that mystery. Good luck

Re: Almost Constant light headed sensation, limbs fall asleep while sleeping

How long have you been on the meds? I think they have to be lowered slowly, with doctors approval for it to be safe. My relative was also put on blood pressure meds, his was 165 over 90 something, which I know is a dangerous level. Maybe your internist could do a sleep study on you to see what your blood pressure is doing while you are at rest, this would either rule in or rule out this as the cause. Then if it is not, they could check other causes.
