32 month old with mini strokes?

Our 32 month old son seems to temporarily lose strength/control on his right side. The episodes last about 10 seconds He seems disoriented and dizzy. This has happened 4 times in the last month that we know of. We took him to his pediatrician and she checked all of his reflexes, motor skills etc. and everything was perfect. She recommended monitoring him closely for now rather than a MRI because he would have to be sedated for that. That was 2 weeks ago and no episodes until today.

Re: 32 month old with mini strokes?

Have you come up with the diagnosis of mini strokes, or is that what his pediatrician has diagnosed him with? I say this because those symptoms have other possible diagnosis' besides strokes.Another possibility would be seizures, and I am sure there are several other things that could be diagnosed as well.

I would suggest a full screening to determine the exact cause of these episodes, and have a clear diagnosis. Of course, anything that causes such symptoms must be very concerning and enough to cause you both great concern and fear, Try your best to put those emotions aside while you investigate your babies problem. It is like;y that you will need to go ahead with the MRI, because it is very important to establish exactly what is going on. The sooner the better, as 4 episodes in a month is very often. If he has another episode I would take him into the emergency room (at the Children Hospital, if you have on nearby) immediately as they would have all the proper diagnostic equipment at their fingertips as well as the specialists available to treat his properly.

I wish you the very best, and I am anxious to hear of any news you may have, as I am worried about you, Janet

Re: 32 month old with mini strokes?

writeleft,
Thank you for your reply! I came up with that "diagnosis" and I didn't really mean it as a diagnosis rather a description of what we saw. What other diagnoses is there for this type of presentation? Thank you for your thoughts and prayers!!
