Chiari in general... and pregnancy

At the beginning of the year, I had surgery to remove a pituitary tumor.. and now apparently Chiari showed on my latest MRI (5mm). Ontop of it I'm pregnant.

My OB seemed to know a lot, except at the point where she told me to see a neurologist; refusing to accept me seeing my neurosurgeon at Duke who's care I'm still under from my last surgery. I'm not hopeful that the neurologist will be very knowledgeable when it comes to this (she wasn't about the pituitary tumor which is less rare than this).

I guess my question is does anybody know any information for having Chiari when you're pregnant? I've heard c-section is the best way to go.

Honestly, any information about Chiari would be great; I'm pretty clueless besides knowing it could be the real reason for my neck/shoulder pain, constant headache, foggyness, exhaustion..

Yes that's probably why you are feeling this way. My sister, 58, had the decompresion 4 years ago. Hasn't had any issues since. Before her surgery, she would quickly get terrible headaches, and almost pass out. Once she even fainted. So do be careful if you experience any of those symptoms. Beurologist should be able to give you advice on section question.

Re: Chiari in general... and pregnancy

My husband has a Chiari and has decompression 4 years ago (he's 38 now) and still has so many problems but there is way more going on with him than just the Chiari. Anyway everything I know about chiari would state that a C-section would be the safest but I would ask your neurologist because a spinal can cause MANY more problems with the Chiari. I hope you get some answers!!! Good Luck!!
