No, I dont' get it anymore. Never found the "official" cause but after getting on Topamax (migraine preventative), it went away in 4 months. So, it seemed to be a migraine symptom.

So im seeing a neiro tomorrow and see what he thinks every Dr ive told about this weird vibrating pulling twich feeling in my head like literally insode my brain they think im absolutly CRAZY!!! im glad im not the only one out there Thanks Jennie

Mine has calmed down significantly - but it is still there at times. I have since been diagnosed with Migraine, so maybe it is a migraine symptom. Now, the shaking only shows up after long drives or flights or when I'm under alot of stress, so that would be consistent with migraine too. Either way - mine is WAY better than it was.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

I have migraine.....silent migraine and this was definately an issue for me. My head would feel vibraty as well as the bridge of my nose and my upper lip would twitch as well as many other symptoms. If you think about it, the nerves in from our neck up are all involved, so vibrations sensations would be common.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

I have had this head vibrating thing since my early teens.

It starts at my ears and vibrates up to my eyes. It goes in spurts of 4-5 seconds very rapid vibrations and sometimes last for about 10 min. And it feels like it goes straight through my brain from the side to side (like ear to ear).

It has been happening more and more often throughout the last couple months and this morning it wouldn't stop and is driving me crazy.

I am a nursing student, yet, I don't know what is wrong and afraid to go to the doctor or tell my husband because they will just think I am weird.

As I sit and type this, I can feel it coming ogain. At this time, I don't even know what alleviates it for me.

If it happens again like it did at 8:00am, I don't think I can take it much longer. It doesn't cause pain, it is just irritating and causes my vision to blur slightly.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

I have only briefly looked at some of these posts, but I wanted to share what I have learned a little bit. Without getting into my entire history, I just want to say that I have suffered for several years with many symptoms. I have been misdiagnosed repeatedly, tested for many things, and tried many different medications. Currently, the only thing I take daily is thyroid medication because I haven't bought into all the explanations for why I've felt the way I do. My symptoms are: frequent vibrating sound/feeling in ears, occasional tinnitus, my brain sometimes feels like it's vibrating, rapid heartrate, shortness of breath, pressure in head and often throbbing head, fatigue, sometimes my brain feels "fried". I probably missed some, but those are the basic symptoms. I have been to allergists, endocrinologists, cardiologists, a cardiac electrophysiologist, a neurologist, a neurosurgeon, etc... Besides all the other diagnoses, I was told by the cardiac electrophysiologist that I had P.O.T.S. or some kind of an autonomic disorder. I didn't totally fit all the symptoms though and the medications didn't help me at all. Anyway, last year I took my daughter for prolotherapy, and while I was in the waiting room I was reading a book about headaches. In the book, it talked about Barre-Lieou syndrome which pretty much listed all my symptoms. It is often the result of a whiplash injury, and I remembered that I was involved in a car accident shortly before this all began. Anyway, I eventually ended up getting an MRI of my neck (the brain MRIs never showed any isssues), and found out I have three herniations, bone spur complexes, spinal stenosis, and cord compression. My arms never really bothered me, so I didn't think I had neck problems. I had always said that my symptoms would get worse the more I moved or turned my head though. I tried prolotherapy injections to strengthen my neck ligaments, but they only helped me a little. By the way, the nerves that control autonomic functions run through the neck.

Since then, I went to a neurologist who told me that all my symptoms can be attributed to the blockage of cerebrospinal fluid in my neck. CSF is supposed to bathe the brain and spinal cord and when it doesn't flow properly you can experience these symptoms. This can happen as the result of disc herniations anywhere in the spine, a chiari malformation, tumors, etc... I am planning on having artificial disc replacement done at two levels in my spine to correct the problem. Even if you don't recall a specific injury, it doesn't mean you don't have disc herniations or another problem that could cause the blockage of CSF. I ended up going down so many different paths looking for a diagnosis because my symptoms seemed related to so many different areas of my body. If an MRI doesn't show disc herniations, a discogram can better show if there is any structural damage to any discs of the spine or even any tears that could be causing problems.

I hope this somehow helps someone avoid having to go through all that I have.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

One more thing, I just read some posts referring to muscular issues in the neck. My neurologist prescribed muscle relaxants because with neck issues, muscles spasms can exacerbate the symptoms. I choose not to take them because I don't like to take medication unless absolutely necessary, but this may help someone else.

tbissell,

i am wondering if you still come here. how is everything going? I have symptoms that are almost identical to yours and was wondering if you have found the cause... has the topamax helped you? i couldn't figure out a way to send a message to you, so i am hoping you will read this message.

I would very much appreciate it if you could write a reply..

I find your post to be very interesting. For the past 9 months or so I've had various symptoms that come and go from heartburn, muscle spasms in neck, back pain, muscle and joint pain, aching teeth, pressure in head, eye discomfort, jaw pain, numbness or weakness around mouth etc. The last two months I started having the inner shaky feeling. I call them tremors but it feels like a motor is inside my head and body. The vibrations/shakes are pretty much all day now. It's especially bad when I'm tired. Sometimes I'll have it in my chest with heart palpitations. Other times I can feel it in my legs and when the sensation is in my head, that is when I am a complete mess and can't stand it.

I notice now that I am having problems looking someone in the face and talking to them b/c of the "rattling" feeling in my head. My eyes feel like they are twitching and the muscles in my forehead (which effect my eyes) feel like they are in spasm or trembling. I can't focus or concentrate in this state. I was standing in a store the other day and felt the "shakes" so I'm at a point now where I'm anxious to even go out. I do notice when I'm more active that it's not as bad. I guess it's b/c I'm not thinking about it as much.

I've had various exams and seen GPs, ENTs, gastroenterologist, eye doctors, oral surgeon (I grind and was told I have mild TMJ) issues) and had several blood tests. The only thing I noticed from my latest blood exam is that my glucose level was low (69) and my ionized calcium was a bit high. All docs seem to think I'm suffering from anxiety disorder but I feel it's the symptoms that are causing my anxiety. I'm going to see an endocrinologist next month b/c I get the "fullness in the throat" feeling where my thyroid is but all blood tests have shown no evidence of a thyroid problem.

I recently had an MRI that revealed a Chiari 1 malformation. This is why I said I found your post interesting as I see you mentioned this. I am due to take a follow-up MRI of my cervical spine as my neuro stated that the top of my cervical spine looked good from what they see on my MRI results but in being cautious, they want to make sure there is no evidence of syrinx(sp?) with it.

He told me that I shouldn't worry but of course I'm concerned. I read all of the stories of people who needed to have brain surgery and that scares me to death. I was searching for a diagnosis prior to finding out about the chiari malformation but almost wish I didn't know about this now I'm over analyzing everything with regard to my body. For me, I do get really tired sometimes with hardly any energy but the main issue right now is this constant shaking/vibrating/tremors. That is effecting the quality of my life big time. I can deal with the other symptoms that come and go (for now) but it's just too hard dealing with the inner tremors.

Also, I haven't tried a muscle relaxant for these tremors. Back when I had muscle spasms in my neck I was on a muscle relaxant for about a week and that helped a bunch but I'm hesitant to take it now b/c I don't think it will help this problem. The last few night I have been taking 550mg of Naproxen and that seems to help calm the tremors down a bit.

sorry for not checking back more, but I am doing so well that I have basically just moved on. But it appears that the cause for the "vibrtating head", as well as the other multitude of symptoms I was having, was caused by "migraine associated vertigo". I have been on 50mg of Topamax since last May. By October of 2008, the vibrating stopped and hasn't come back. So the situation appears to be solved. MAV is the abbrevation for the problem. I suffered IMMENSELY with this problem so I am glad to be back to "near" normal. I still get "triggered" attacks of MAV and have some bad days here and there but this happens about once a month for about 2-3 days. It's not a big deal anymore. I hope that helps

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

I have what is called migraine associated vertigo. It causes me to be dizzy 24 hours a day unless I am on a preventative to stop it. Fortunately, topamax has me completely under control right now. Without it, I can't function

I get the vibrating head too...Its the most miserable thing... And yes, I believe it has to do with your vest system trying to reconcile these mixed signals....

Angry Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

well I have something similiar. I have osteoarthritis in the TMJ joint which causes neck, jaw, occasional ear pain and stuffiness but not wax filled. When I lay down I have been feeling this vibration that only comes when I am at rest sitting and resting and not while I am up and about. I have started some new medications which could be causing this ? wellbutrin. and started and stopped lyrica...I thought it was my heart valves, then my ears, then I just dont know! !frustrating...The sensation shifts to my front chest wall by my heart and then to my upper shoulder and neck. I also feel a vibrating in my ear that gets loud and soft, which sounds like a running refrigerator. The vibrating sensations are like a tuning fork vibrating, a flutter like a moth flitting around a window...I know its strange. Thats the best I can describe it .I am going for a hearing test to check that..::

Kareena, I have the same exact symptoms. The vibrating sensation shifts from my head, neck, chest wall , and shoulder too. Sometimes I think it's my heart, other times my ear, or my neck. I too notice it when I'm standing, sitting, or lying still. I got a hearing test some months ago that came back fine. I saw an ENT today and he told me that I definitely have a TMJ problem and that it may be inflamed. He also wants me to do a sinus scan but I don't see the reason for one. I guess it's b/c I mentioned about the on/off pressure in my head and face. He says that it looks like I have an allergy too.

Aside from following up with the ENT, I'm going to see a vascular surgeon. My ENT told me one reason why I may be experiencing the vibrations and buzzing/motor noise all day and a vascular surgeon will help in determining if he's right. The vibrations are just too bothersome. Ativan works great for reducing the symptoms, especially the vibrating/buzzing sensation but I'm too scared of getting addicted to it so I don't bother with it.

By the way, my ENT (like all the rest of my doctors) said that the common link for all of this is of course... stress.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

Hello, everyone. I'm new to this forum. I'm not even sure if I'm doing this right. Last night, I Googled, "head vibrations, dizziness" to see what turned up. I found this forum. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel compelled to tell my story.
I'm a 36 year old Italian-American who lives in Italy. I teach English as a second language. Part of the reason why I came here was to help myself better deal with my 16 year anxiety disorder problem, and to experience my heritage on a day-to-day basis. I've had dizzy spells on-and-off for most of my life. There are 2 kinds of spells that I experience: the kind that I wake up with and that lasts for the whole day, and the sudden, world-is-being-shifted-on-me kind, which lasts for about a couple of seconds. Well, the 2nd kind (sudden shift in the world) has been happening more recently for about 4 months now. About 2 months ago, these sudden head spins have been accompanied by what I can only describe as a head vibration. It feels like someone is taking a vibrating wand and touches it to the base of my neck for about a second. This vibration feeling spreads throughout my head and causes me to jump, or jerk my head because of it's powerful surge. It scares the living daylights out of me. I immediately begin thinking that I have a brain tumor. After the vibration spell, my face feels very tender, like sinus pressure. I sometimes have pain in my jaw when I'm eating, too. The head vibrations are of varying degrees, too. I have the more subdued variety, and of course the kind that feels like I've just been hit over the head with a frying pan and my head feels the vibrating repercussions. I sometimes feel like my head is a big cymbal that someone is striking. Does this make any sense to anyone?? Should I mention again that I suffer from anxiety attacks/disorder for the last 16 years? Also, it seems that I've become more sensitive to loud sounds. The loud sounds cause my head to vibrate a little, too.
Here in Italy, the doctors remind me more of the 3 Stooges. I asked my doctor to please send me to see a neurologist. He refused. He said that I don't have a neurological problem. My problem, he said, was inner ear. So, I have an appointment to see a specialist on Monday. According to my doctor, I may have crystals in my inner ear that have become displaced, which cause the dizzy spells. I'm not buying it. I feel like there is something more serious going on. I always prepare myself for the worst. I should also mention that I get dizzy sometimes when I turn my head to the right or left, or up and down. I'm a mess. I'm depressed because of this. I never seem to feel right. If it's not my anxiety playing tricks on me, it's something else. I feel like these vibrations are getting worse and that it's leading up to a seizure or something. That's what these vibrations feel like -- seizures.
Can anyone please help?? Anything you have to post in regards to this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and God bless.

Roxy

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

Hi Roxy. It's frustrating going through all of this and not knowing what's wrong. I have a range of symptoms and some include the same ones you describe. Sometimes I feel like I'm having a mini-seizure or something similar too. I also get pain in my jaw and pressure in my face around the sinus area. I've had two MRI's and was told I have a chiari 1 malformation but my neurologist and otarlynologist don't seem to think that is responsible for my symptoms.

I'm going to have a series of tests done next week to check for an inner ear disorder. I was told that my symptoms may be related to an inner ear problem. Whatever the problem may be, I know that anxiety has exasperated my symptoms. I'm so "in tune" with everything that goes on with my body. It's a snowball effect because when you have symptoms and aren't sure what's causing them, you become more and more anxious. The longer you go without a real diagnosis, the worse the symptoms become and as a result, the more anxious you become and it's just a cycle of going from bad to worse.

I have really bad "flare-ups" where the inner vibrations are just awful. I find that by taking two Benadryl capsules that it makes it so much better. It dulls the vibrations a lot and of course makes me drowsy which isn't good during the day but it helps a bunch.
I'll report back on the results of my audio tests and in the meantime, take comfort in knowing that many of us have/are suffering from the same or similar symptoms as yourself and after seeing many doctors, having a ton of exams, MRI's, blood tests, etc the doctors didn't find anything seriously wrong such as a brain tumor which I was scared I had too before taking my MRI.

Re: Vibrating Head with MAV or Inner ear symptoms?? Anyone???

Hi Rich

I came across your post today by typing 'vibration in head' into google.

Sounds like you have exactly the same thing I have been experiencing for the past 6 or more months (oddly enough I was having extreme weekly migraines (1 or 2x) which have settled due to a variety of treatments but I still have the head vibration thing going on). I do not experience dizziness or nausea, just feel like something is moving my brain from side to side (fast).

If you have found a cure for your ailment (which I really hope you have) please email me with details to protext 'at' tpg.com.au and let me know (replace 'at' with @ and no spaces).

Thanks so much
Michelle
