Arachnoid Cyst (Posterior Fossa)

Hey
I was recently diagnosed with an arachnoid cyst in the posterior fossa which is 3cmx2cm. It was an incidental finding but I have a neurosurgeon appointment this Wednesday to follow up.
I have had increasing headache/migraine symptoms over the last 2 years which now extend to spots in my vision, nausea, tinitus, balance issue and an overwhelming pressure in my head, worse in the mornings.
From what I have read online most doctors simply say they are not related to these type of symptoms and all they need to do is a few follow up steps but this to me is CRAZY. I have all these symptoms and this growth - surely they are related.
I am in Perth, Western Australia - i welcome comments from people who have had/have same type cysts and any information.

Kind regards

Re: Arachnoid Cyst (Posterior Fossa)

Hi. I am spending sleepless nights after I was diagnosed with Arachnoid cyst posterior fossa. I went to my GP for a different reason. I had slight buzzing noise from my left ear. I exactly don't know when this started, but i could recall it is there for more that 6 months. I could hear this only during the night and this has disturbed my sleep. the gp refereed to ENT specialist. He checked my ear and my hearing was ok. He refereed me to have a MRI to eliminate any tumors in the brain. But when I saw the MRI report it clearly states Arachnoid cyst. The funny thing is both my GP nor ENT specialist did not even tell me about this cyst. I don't know why?? It is on my own interest i am researching on the net. I just want to know how serious is this. Does this going to affect any of the regular activities. I have just started my career and family. My wife or my parents does not know about it. My son is just turned 1 yrs. I don't know how this is going to affect my life. Kindly help me to find the seriousness and precautions to take.

Thanks.

Re: Arachnoid Cyst (Posterior Fossa)

Hi,

I have now seen 2 neurosurgeons and neither of them want to touch it. They same it is "incidental" ie doesn't cause any symptoms but I disagree, not that I want surgery! But I do want relief from my symptoms.

If it grows bigger or really starts to affect your coordination then they will do something. But they both told me that I must tell all my doctors and if I ever have head trauma I must also tell the doctors as it can rupture. Not very comforting.

You don't need to worry as there is nothing they will do anyway. What I can suggest is some alternative healing.

Good luck.

Hi. I to have been diagnosed with a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst. Not sure of the size. Have had an MRI scan and have seen a neurologist. He too seems to think this is not the cause. I have very similar symptoms to you, continual dull headache, sometimes very sharp pains and migrane type. Aching neck shoulders and top of back. Facial pains, tinitus has become worse and it sometimes affects my eyes, blurredness. I also get tingling around my face and over the top of my head. Sometimes feel like my muscles are trembling. Tired all the time but I don't sleep well.
As the neurolgist and my doctor seem to think this is not the cause I've now been refered to a pain clinic to help me deal and live with the pain. Big deal. I don't want to deal with it, it's affecting my life, I want to get rid of it. I have to see a physiotherapist (this is were it all started from. 2 years of different tests and tablets) and a psychologist. Guess they think I might do something stupid.
The cyst is the only diagnosis I have, they can't find anything else wrong. What's wrong with these doctors, don't they read what other doctors have done and the frustration people like us go through?
A list of symptoms on a site I've found (yep, I've got most of them, just glad I don't have the seizures or blackouts).
Headaches
Vertigo
Dizziness
Aphasia
Dysphagia
Spastic Gait
Spasticity
Dystonia
Rigidity
Muscle Weakness
Fatigue
Irritability
Twitches
Tremors
Myoclonic Jerks
Tonic Clonic Seizures
Simple Partial Seizures
Blackouts
Memory Difficulties
Incontinence

I was diagnosed with arachnoid cyst in posterior fossa in 2008 after 17 years of debilitating migraines, loss of balance, loss of conciousness, swelling in arms & fingers as well as tingling & numbness upon waking. Cyst the size of 2cm by 3cm by by 5cm was found on MRI.
Neurologist stated I was "Fine!"and the finding of the cyst was "incidental". I am still suffering daily and now have finding of stenosis & fibromyalgia to add to the mix. Could it really be the cyst? I think so. I wish the neurologists would listen!

Re: Arachnoid Cyst (Posterior Fossa)

I have had the same symptoms for the past year. Every doctor has pushed it off on stress, no xrays, no MRI. I can't live with the pain much longer. Thanks for your diag. I'm going to call my doctor run this by him.

I can so understand your frustrations with this. I too have a posterior fossa arachnoid cyst---it measures 5x3x4. I have MANY neurological problems and they tell me that my issues are not connected to my cyst?? I have had many specialist tell me the same thing. I find this VERY difficult to believe. I have partial epilepsy, dystonia, ADD, tremors, facial palsey and depression. They tell me that all of these are seperate issues???? I have researched arachnoid cysts and so many others have the same symptoms. I am very confused and frustrated myself. I wish I could shed some light on this for you, unfortunately I can not. Much more research should be done on these type of cysts because I believe with all my heart that in the future they will discover that they are not harmless cysts at all. I know its too late for me to benefit but I would like to see that some day others won't have to endure such difficult diseases caused by these masses that don't belong in our brains.
