Anaemia and pregnancy/breastfeeding and its effects?

Hi

Does anyone know the possible effects of being anaemic whilst pregnant and breast feeding on the child?

Could it affect their health? what do we need to look out for, if anything?

Do you know of any research?

While breast milk is rich in antibodies, it is poor in iron. A study found (??) the link between low levels of iron in blood of breastfeeding women and higher risk of anemia in their babies. I would think that thing to do is regular check ups with the PEDS doc, and your regular check ups for CBC and anemia.

Re: Anaemia and pregnancy/breastfeeding and its effects?

Thanks for posting x

My daughter is 5 now but she constantly looks pale, she is a great eater and eats all kinds of fruit and veges but is picking up lots of infections (which means lots of time off for me which is not good ). So i wonder...if i was anaemic when pregnant with her and also whilst breast feeding if this may have had an effect on her...???

Bet the doctors wouldnt check it out anyway

Re: Anaemia and pregnancy/breastfeeding and its effects?

I see. Well, that may have resolved if it did happen after she started on solid foods. Anemia can be resolved through diet alone, believe it or not if there isn't an underlying condition and all is well.

In your daughter's case it is common for small children to be low in iron or even to be anemic. This is due to the increase of demand for iron due to growth spurts and possibly diets low in iron.

Perhaps if you give symptoms they may check this for you. I sure do hope so. Keep us posted.
