A really minor problem...just curiosity really - Burns & Injuries Message Board

About 1 or 2 months ago I accidentally stabbed my thumb on the bottom joint with a knife (don't ask!) and it went numb etc which didn't surprise me, but even now it still twinges if I touch where I cut it, and to a lesser extent futher up my thumb. The surface of that area of my thumb (basically a line from the cut to my thumbnail) is also still slightly numb, but not much. It doesn't stop me moving my thumb or anything so it's not really a problem, but does anyone know how long it's likely to be like that? Will my thumb be like that forever or will it go away after a while? Like I said, it's not really affecting movement etc, it's just a bit irritating.

Sorry about complaining about something so minor when there's far more serious stuff on here but I thought maybe someone could give me some information.

It sounds like you sliced a small nerve. No big deal. It could take months for the feeling to come back. The good news is that nerves outside the spinal cord do regenerate. It just happens very slowly.

I knew I'd done something to a nerve but I had no idea how long it'd take to get better, if at all, because last time I had a cut that went numb this didn't seem to happen. Anyway like I said, I'm not worried, it's just irritating when I bang it

I cut the finger next to my pinkie on the laft hand when it decided to get involved with slicing oranges for my daughter's soccer team. It did cut a nerve and it never healed. I still have some numbness beyond the scar tissue of the outer knuckle!
