| Re: smashed finger
Stiffness in the joint may be resolved by applying heat (ie warm soak, insulated hot pack, heating pad) then gently passively stretching your finger (use uninjured hand to bend stiff joint). Bend as far as you can tolerate and hold the stretch for 20 seconds. Do this ten times every hour or two until the stiffness resolves. If the digit feels hard under the skin, but not at the joint, this may either be edema (swelling) or scar tissue. For swelling perform retrograde massage- use lotion to massage and mobilize liquid away from your fingertip, pushing it up and out. If it is scar, use lotion and firm pressure to move tissues in small circular pattern to break up the scar.
