Ligament damage/ Help with pain - Burns & Injuries Message Board

I went to my chiropractor yesterday cause i hurt my finger something awful well needless to say i disclocated the knucle and cracked the bone and tore my ligaments. He popped it back into place and told me to take iburofen for pain and keep the frog splint on for 12 weeks. I am having so much pain is there anything else that will help this hurts so bad and especially when i take the splint off to ice it. It feels like someone just bent my finger backwards. I have no movement in my finger i and i was wondering if anybody has experienced the sae thing and can give me some suggestions on pain management or should i go and see a dr for this?

I think your best bet here would be to see your regular primary doc for this.A chiro is not really qualified to treat this type of an injury.You may need much more treatment here than just a splint, depending on what is all damaged in that finger.Your primary can also Rx you something for the pain.You really do need to get this injury evaluated by a real medical Dr,not a chiropractor.good luck,FB

I agree that a chiropractor is not the person to deal with this type of injury, however primary care doctors are far from hand specialists. If you have a hand fracture you should go to an emergency room for a proper x-ray. From there you may be referred to a hand specialist. Some fractures are inherently unstable and will not remain alligned if merely splinted. If your fracture moves and heals in the wrong position, you may have a chronic, painful hand that needs to be re-broken and re-set to correct. Furthermore, if only splinting or casting is indicated, a 12 week duration is simply an appalling suggestion that can lead to joint stiffenss and possible contracture! Fractures of the upper extremity generally unite in half that time. Unless you have some underlying health condition that slows healing (ie uncontrolled diabetes) this is too long. Get your hand checked by a real doctor. Also, find a new chiro.
