How long does it take for foot sprain to heal?

One week ago I fell off a step, spraining my foot in the process. As of today, the swelling seems to have almost gone away. It's still very bruised. BUT, I still have a fair amount of pain in the top of my foot and sometimes through the heel... it's a throbbing toothache-like pain, which really hasn't lessened in severity since the second day. I'm able to put my weight on it, but I'm still limping.

How long does it generally take an injury like this to heal completely? I'm in my early 30's and in good health. I've only sprained my foot one other time (10 years ago) and that time was back to normal within a couple days. Being that some things are getting better though (the swelling for instance) should I assume that things are on the mend, or would I be wise to get it xrayed still?

Thanks for your input!

Get it x-rayed. The toothache throbbing reminds me of when I actually had a fracture. I could put weight on my foot to a decent extent, but if it was too much boy, did it throb.

Believe it or not, but sprains are actually more painful and require longer to heal than fractures or breaks. I fell and sprained my ankle 2 years ago and, although the swelling and *major* pain was gone within a week, it continued to hurt for the next 3-4 months. I would definitely advise you to go ahead and get x-rays to be certain that this is a sprain and not a fracture. Good luck!
