dry, itchy wound...need help

I have an old injury (puncture wound) that has healed except the skin over it keeps becoming very dry and itchy, peeling off until it becomes a scab over where the wound was. The skin underneath is totally healed and intact, just the surface skin becomes dry and itchy and peels. Any thoughts on cause/cure? Thanks!

Re: dry, itchy wound...need help

it is very likely that because the skin underneath is formed over scar tissue the upper layers of the skin are not as durable or thick as the rest of your skin causing it to dry out faster and kind of flake away. The best thing you can do is use either a triple antibiotic A&D type ointment on it, or a lanolin based like Bag Balm, or an oat based like Aveeno (or just taking some quick oats and putting a hand full of them in a wash cloth....tie it off, run under some warm water and dab on any dry or itchy areas.) You will have to apply whatever treatment you choose at least 2 or 3 times a day and continue for a few months to let the area of skin continue healing, resting, and fortifying it's self. If none of this helps wait until it is not a sore and try cortizone cream or diaper cream on it, it may initially dry out some, but w/in 2 or 3 days the dryness will disappear and your skin will be supple and soft.

Thanks, however...the wound is about 3 years old, and I have tried numerous salves and creams (including bag balm). I would have thought by now it would have gotten better?? I haven't tried diaper creme yet, but I have put cortisone on it.

Have you tried an anti-fungal cream? It could be a type of yeast which can be common with wounds. If it is, it should clear it right up. A cotton ball dabbed in bleach would also take care of it.
