Concussion & After Effects

A month and a half ago I was caught in domestic violence and recieved repeated blows to the back of my head and ended up getting a concussion. I never went to the hospital to get it checked out but obviously had the normal side effects of a concussion such as loss of memory and vomiting. Since the concussion though (a month and a half now) every day I have constant headaches at the back of my head and across my forehead that last all day. I know I need to get this checked out, but has anyone had a concussion and suffered headaches like this afterwards?

Thanks,

Danielle

Re: Concussion & After Effects

i certainly hope you are now out of that violent situation. the thing about concussion is there are varying degrees of it, how soon did you vomit after the hits? immediately or well after? it does matter. considering what you endured, you really DO need to have at least an MRI or CT to check for possible bleeding into your brain. the vomiting would suggest a much deeper brain injury than just a mere concussion(or a higher grade of concussion). it does happen with the type of attack you went thru i used to work with sexual assault victims and victims of domestic violence and the gamut of injuries was wide and very sad(i was also called to the domestic violence center as a medic FF at times too). getting that brain scan really should be done, even at this point it could show some type of an old injury that could be causing your symptoms. this is one of those better safe than sorry types of situations,ya know? you just really do need to take care of you right now. and getting this fully evaluated is what is needed. you just DO need to know if this was much more than 'just' a concussive injury to your brain. most minor concussions do resolve themselves with time and healing. but if this has been a repeat attack, the more times you have been hit in the head, the more likely the damage can be more severe. its a cumulative effect.

also, considering just where you stated the blows were taken,at the base of your skull,it very well could have also damaged or affected the upper c spine. getting that MRIed too wouldn't hurt. there ARE victims help groups out there espescially if you press charges against the perp(law enforcment has the victims rights info and help numbers). they are there FOR YOU. just get yourself FULLY checked out to make certain nothing really major took place. it would show on even a CT if you did experience any type of actual brain bleed. i do hope things are better for you now than they were. just place yourself at the head of your list of getting you checked out before anythig else,K? you DO deserve that much hon. please keep me posted, take care,Marcia

Re: Concussion & After Effects

Hi Marcia,

Thanks for the reply. And yes, I am out of the situation, I'm no longer with my husband. In regards to your question, I vomitted after about half an hour of receiving the blow to the back of my head. My head repeatedly hit the wall. And then 1-2 days later I was throwing up again. But yeh, ever since I have daily headaches. I've also noticed that I can no longer sit up straight without it being uncomfortable. I used to have great posture, but now I'm all slouched forward because it causes discomfort to sit too straight. I did make an appointment to see my doctor and will have to get her to get me in to get a CT Scan done. I hope I'm okay, but something in me says theres something behind these headaches and the slouching.

Re: Concussion & After Effects

glad you are out of that crappy situation, you are better than that. considering the mechanisim of your injuries, you DO need to have a full scan of your brain and that upper spine area too. you really just don't have a clue til you get that look inside as to what could have been injured during an attack like that. i would push your doc for a look at your brain and that c spine with a contrasted MRI. that really would be the better test. certain things do show up better upon CT tho too,but with your overall symptoms(and continued vomiting well after the injury date),you just need that MRI to be sure. given the circumstances,i just cannot imagine any doc not wanting to really help you out here and find out whats up in those two key areas that could very well explain your ongoing symptoms. did you actually press charges against your husband? was there a police report made? please continue to keep me posted on all things. hopefully whatever is wrong is not somethingthat wont get better with time, but you just really need to know what could be up there and affecting you now. take care hon,and let me know. Marcia

Re: Concussion & After Effects

I'm also glad to hear that your no longer with your husband. Sounds to me that you are much better off.

As far as the concussion,, well I myself am suffering from post concussion with two concussions. One blow to the front of my head, and one in the back. It was due to a fall two weeks ago.

I have been to my family doctor who did a cat scan and found that there was no current bleeding, just severe brain bruising. The effects of this injury has been severe headaches, nausia, confusion, loss of memory, constand pressure in my head, dizziness, blurred vision. It's been horrible.

I was reffered to a sports medicine doctor who said that I needed to see a specialist after testing my ability to remember, to follow simple directions such as drawing a box, remembering 3 words, different tests in which I failed terribly.

I went to the Neurosurgeon and her time with me was no longer than 5 minutes. I left her office with a very unsure feeling. She told me to return to work, and to take Tylenol for the pain. So far, I have not found one over the counter medication that would phase the pain I'm in. She also gave me a drug called Treximet. I had the worst side effects from taking that medication and still no relief. I am no longer taking that medication due to the side effects, and the fact that one of the top side effects is stroke. I figure that I have enough to get through without having to worry about a stroke.

My husband and I are talking about getting a second opinion because I don't have the security of knowing that I'm going to be okay. I mean, it's been two weeks today since the injury. I was told that it would be getting better, it's getting worse.

I would suggest to you to go to your doctor. It pays to be safe. I hope that you will get better soon and that you will get good news when you go to the doctor.
Keep me informed as to how the visit goes.

God bless...

Laura

OOOPS... Just noticed the date on your post. lol I hope all is well with you today. If you have any information on my situation I would appreciate it a lot.
