Question Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

Hi,I am very confused as to what is wrong with me. I have urethra mild pain/sensitivity. I had my first bladder infection nearly three months ago now, which was bad, but was cleared with antibiotics. Two weeks after the infection i had this mild sebsation pain coming on which has stayed with me ever since. I had a my urine tested, but it came back negative. I have no serious pain, no frequency, no urgency, just this pain sensation, which i can feel on my urethra. Im not sure if this is related to the infection or not? I am generally healthy, never suffered bladder/ urethra problems in my life before. i suffer various allergies though but i dont think that my bladder and allergic reactions can be connected? These symptoms get worse before my period, and mainly come on during the afternoon/evening? i am so confused, please can anyone shed some light? i am 30, by the way, thanks - Sally.

I've never heard of this, but it raises a red flag in my mind. I don't want to scare you, but you really should get it checked out with a urologist. Constant pain is sometimes an indication of cancer...I'm not saying that is what it is, but it is definitely something you want to have ruled out as a possibility. Please get it checked out by a professional as soon as you can.

Hi Sally,

I have the exact same symtoms and I was about to call my doctor but, before I do, I was wondering if you had figured out what was wrong with you. Please let me know as I am in pain a lot and need to do something about this. I am curious about one thing...what is your age? Are you possibly peri-menopausal? Here is my theory...that something has changed in my body, maybe something shifted and is putting pressure on my bladder. Let me know. Cheryl

Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

Just wanted to say I have overactive bladder which occurred after an infection - the pain stayed even tho there was no infection. Now after 1 1/2 years it is finally abating. I took the herb cornsilk in a tea and it helped a lot. Constant pain like this in the bladder can be overactive/sensitive bladder - dont be scared by the cancer comment - pretty uncommon though have a scan to be sure. It eventually goes - mine just falres now and again where as before the pain was there constantly. Good luck xxx

Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

Those can also be symptoms of interstitial cystitis, which causes symptoms of a UTI, but with no infection present. It is, however, different from overactive bladder.

Just wanted to put that out there for anyone else with the same symptoms who might be looking at this thread.

Be well,
Inq

well i post this same info on several threads, but it because i have been through so much myself. if you have ruled out anything serious. see a good chiropractor. the nerves are possibly being pressed on. it sure helps me and i have been through alot since 01 regarding similar problems.

Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

After 3 cystoscopies and 2 urologists I was diagnosed with Urethreal Pain Syndrome otherwise known as Pelvic Pain Syndrome. I've tried everything non-narcotic. The pain is very debilitating and I refuse to live with it. You shouldn't either. BUG YOUR DOCTOR to find out what is wrong. I am finally on a combination of Lamictal and Xanaflex to help control it, we'll see if that works. I wish more people with this problem would post what has helped them.

Unhappy Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

Hi Everyone,

My pain is still there and seems to flare up sometimes more than others (though I am still not sure what triggers it).

My problem is my doctor, she keeps threatening to send me to a specialist but every time I go and see here she just keeps checking for infection. I know the last culture they did showed nothing but she just prescribed different antibiotics 'just in case'.

I have been tested for STIs (all clear) but I think I need to see a specialist. Other than going privately does anyone know how I can go around my doctor to a specialist.....want to rule out anything serious.

Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

You will need to see an urologist or gyn. You may have interstitial cystitial (IC), which a uro will diagnose. Note: 13yrs ago I had a bladder infection, continued to be on different antibiotics &/or anti-inflammatories. Nothing helped. To this day I am still dealing with the problem, which was diag. as IC. It can be stress or food related, etc. Mine seems to be food related. I currently take Elmiron (Rx) and Prelief (over the counter mineral supplements. My symptoms do seem to get worse before my period. I posted another message within this topic area. Pls read, if you'd like.

I wish more people with this problem would post what has helped them.

I posted the above weeks ago. No one replied. The xanaflex made me super anxious so I couldn't take it. Still ramping up to the effective dose of lamictal but I'm still in a lot of pain. I'm 43 and I have too much going on to live this way. The doctors are frustrated too. I was finally sent to a physical therapist who is very interested in this particular problem. She gave me some hope that I will be able to control this constant pain without drugs. But I want a quick fix damn it!!! They even tried shooting lydicane up my urethra to no avail.

There is a lot of information out there relating to Interstitial Cystitis (which I don't have) but not about urethral pain syndrome. The doctors just straight up don't know either. I was finally refered to a neurologist who prescribed the lamictal and the xanaflex. But nothing I've tried so far works. I wish some of us who have this condition (and have ruled out infection) could band together and demand some answers.

Does anyone know ANYTHING that will help aleviate this pain other than narcotics???

Re: Urethra/bladder sensitivity, please help?

hi rani, i saw your posting back in december 2004, is your pain gone by now. i am contacting you, because my father, 69, has apparently urethral pain syndrome after a prostate surgery. he is in pain since more than a year and he can't stand that naymore. He tried pretty much everything, but no results. now he is going through TENS (you might have heard it) and since it doens't do much, they are now contemplating sacral neuromodulation, do you know anything about? are you getting better now? i really hope so. any idea information to share will be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
