Severe Prolapses in Rectal, Bladder & Vaginal Compartments/Rectocele and Cystoceles

To be blunt I am scared to death, physically drained, financially tapped and emotionally spent.

5 months ago, I asked to see a gastroenterologist when my PCP was unable to find an rx's to treat my constipation and severe bloating/abdominal pain. It took 2 months for the specialist to get me in. I told the gastro doc during my consult that I was sure I had either an obstruction or fecal impaction. He told me no, he was the specialist and it was just IBS (which I told him I had had for a decade and this was much more severe). But he said, I was wrong and instructed me to cut out dairy and take laxatives twice a day. We made a deal that if that did not work, he would do a colonoscopy/endoscopy 5 weeks later though he insisted it would not come to that because there was no possible way it was any more than simple IBS. Well after 3 weeks of being unable to leave my bed due to immense pain, bloating and a complete inability to defecate, the specialist finally scheduled me for a 5 day sitz marker test. We got the results and 21 days after our original appointment (29 days after my last real bm) I was finally diagnosed with fecal impaction.

The impaction was then dealt with. However, a few days later, I had gone to urgent care and told an urgent care doctor that following the weeks of straining to have a bm, now I had something coming out of my rectum when I try to have a bm. I told them I looked on Google images and to me it appears to be a rectal prolapse. The doctor did an exam and told me it was internal hemorrhoids. I spent the next several weeks calling and emailing the specialist and my pcp telling them the creams were not helping the "hemorrhoid" it was only getting more painful and larger. They just kept insisting it was hemorrhoids. I should also mention, neither my PCP nor my Gastroenterologist ever gave me a rectal or vaginal exam at any point.

During that time, I also underwent a barium enema to insure the impaction was resolved in prep for the colonoscopy/endocopy/biopsies. Then those took place under general anesthesia following two weeks of a 3x a day enema and laxative regime to "clean me out". Both procedures were negative.

I was given a diagnosis of pelvic floor dysfuction and two weeks later my docs sent me for a cystodefecography. For those who are counting...this is now 5 months after my original request to see a specialist, 5 months after I told the specialists receptionist that there was something obstructing the path of my rectum and my bodies ability to defecate, 2 months since I told the specialist the same as above and over 1 month since I specifically told the urgent care doctor it was a rectal prolapse. But back to the cysto test. For those who haven't had it....check your pride at the door...you have to poo as they x-ray you doing it...two people are in the room on either side of you. But it is extremely effective and accurate. So I had it done...

Finally... a diagnosis! I have a severe prolapse in my Bladder, Rectum and Vagina. The doctor who did the procedure said I have a rectal prolapse (severe), rectocele and cystocele.

I see a colorectal surgeon Thursday. My first priority is obviously to get this all fixed. At this rate, I cannot have a bm without an enema (which I have to do 3 times a day to avoid severe bloat and pain). But when I strain, I have prolapsing organs coming out of both my rectum and vagina. It hurts to have sex, it burns to urinate, and itís even uncomfortable to use a tampon.

I have tried to ask questions of my gastroenterologist, my ob/gyn and my pcp but I am just not getting any real answers. I almost feel like it has something to do with them taking so many months to diagnose things I told them I had months ago. But for now I just want info so I can make the right decisions to figure out which surgery (ies) to have. I am so afraid and so confused. I just feel like I am broken and none of my doctors are helping me. Of course they are all Kaiser, so if one admits they should have done something different, well that's obviously an issue to the other ones.

But have any of you had similar problems? If so, can you give me info on what happened, how it happened, what they did to fix it and whether or not you are happy with the results. Sorry to be so wordy. I just don't know how else to describe the story. It's all been such a disaster.

Any help you can provide by way of your experiences would be greatly appreciated. I am truly very, very scared.

I am facing surgery for similar issues soon. Have you been able to get surgery yet? I'm sorry it has taken so long for you to get help.

ETA: Never mind, I just realized I already replied to your other post!

yeah, I had a very similar expericience, except it took 11 months to get the surg. I had a uterine suspension and a suture rectopexy. without resection. and am awaiting cystocele and rectrocele repair. I begged for help before it came to this actually about 8 months before I was finally diagnosed. I kept getting the eat apricots and more fiber BS. Untill I had an obvious prolapse which really couldnt be disputed. at that time I went to urgent care and just freaking showed them. I then spent the next 11 months finally getting it repaired. because I insisted in having my pelvic floor investigated. (at the time they only thought it was rectal prolapse) turns out it was everything. and I kept firing doctors, changed my insurance, and fought. I was accused of having an anxiety problem (very healthy previsouly, in my thirties, yeah this cause anxiety)I will say in all this babbling 2 things. the incision? I was told that for a better result I shoudl have the large abdominal incision. (I should have done it laproscoply) I have a deformed midsection now and i had a perfect stomach before. I look bad even in jeans. and the most devasting part? I had a suture rectopexy. If you have constipation. they need to do a resection in addition to the suture rectopexy. I cannot go to the bathroom at all without magnesium citrite. Im always in pain. I have to eat or I start getting shaky but even if I have a liquid diet I am so constipated I cant stand it. If you have constipation problems MAKE SURE YOU MAKE THIS CLEAR TO YOUR DR. Be forceful. keep fighting. I swear I can not imagine why it is this way. But I had the same type of experience. Noone was proactive but me. It was the strangest experence of my life. Just keep researching and do not let them do this to you.

Re: Severe Prolapses in Rectal, Bladder & Vaginal Compartments/Rectocele and Cystocel

I have been suffering for 11 years with something very similar. It began with extra time on the toilet, an hour, then 2, sometimes 3 hours, to not being able to go at all. I can't even pass gas normally. I strain to get a little gas out.
I had 2 10 lb babies. And I am messed up.

Nothing is bulging out of me, but I can feel the my cervix is in the way when I try to poop, so I have to push it out of the way with my finger. I give myself an enema every day, and it's not a regular enema, it takes an hour to an hour and a half to get everything out. I fill up with water about 8 times during the hour and don't stop until I am empty. Sometimes it isn't that bad, other times I hurt and feel nauseated during the process.

I then feel good until a few hours after I eat, then the bloating starts, so I don't eat breakfast at all. I eat a tiny lunch (like a bowl of ramen) and take a gas x too, then i eat a normal dinner. Gas pain bothers me during the night, but I need to eat sometime!

I am terrified of surgery because they don't seem to have it down yet.
I am 48, but I am going to wait as long as possible!

You have my sympathy, for sure.
