| Re: When to get colonoscopy?
Hi Penzfan,
I had a colonoscopy today! Its not my first one, so I knew what to expect and I have also done all the different preps out there and still like Suprep the best..It tastes awful but my trick is to bite a lemon between gagging it down and that takes the taste away...
The prep you are doing did not work well for me as the dotor told me that he would have liked me to have been more cleaned out when he did the scoping; however, it was clean enough to get it done. Make sure you stay on that liquid diet all day and do not eat anything 12 hours before your procedure.
My colonoscopy went great- no polyps to remove...big relief since my family has 9 people who have passed from ColoRectal Cancer...I get them done every 3 years...and by the way, I started at age 30.
Good luck!
MSNik

| Re: When to get colonoscopy?
I had a colonoscopy done at age 45 because my grandfather was only 53 when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. I had like 5 polyps that were removed, and a couple of them had signs of precancer, so I was supposed to go back in 3 years, but did not make it back for another check until recently after 5 years had passed. But only two very small polyps were removed, and neither of them were abnormal. Was told my next check could wait another 5 years.
I just read in the paper today that there is discussion in the medical community about lowering the recommended age for a screening from 50 to 40. More young people today are being treated for colon cancer than ever before. If you are overweight or have bad eating habits, a smoker, or have family history of colon cancer, I would not wait until 50 years of age. It's such an easily preventable cancer if you catch the polyps before they turn cancerous.

Congratulations on having a great colonoscopy! Hopefully this will clean me out enough lol. I will definitely follow my doctors instructions, only jello, broth and water for me tomorrow lol. This is something I would NOT want to do a re-take on if I wasn't cleaned out enough for the test ugh.
You definitely have a huge family history, to my knowledge, it's just my maternal grandfather and my mother that had it, so it's an early colonoscopy screening for me, I'm 47 and I will probably have to go every 3 to 5 years, so I best get used to this! It beats the alternative though! I keep telling myself that! Wow! 30? Well, it's worth it to keep this cancer away! Thanks for the response!

Well, I started the dulcolax yesterday at 12 pm, had a bowel movement at 3:00 was fine for a couple of hours. Started the gatorade/miralax mix at 5:00 and was done with the drink at 7:30 pm, I had already started to go clear at that point and went to the bathroom every 20 minutes to 30 minutes until 1:30 am. I managed to get some sleep until 6:30 when I had to get up and get my daughter on the school bus. Had another clear movement at 6:30 am and am now trying to drink some chicken broth. My colonoscopy is scheduled for 2 PM today and I can't wait for it to be over lol. I hope I stop running to the bathroom soon. OH And the PREP WAS NOT THAT BAD! FOR ANYONE THAT IS SCARED, JUST DO IT! YOU WILL BE FINE!

My colonoscopy is today at 2 pm, pending the results I'm thinking they are going to tell me to come back in three to five years. My mother just recently died from colon cancer and her father had colon cancer as well, so I am high risk. My mom was 69 when she passed away. She never had a colonoscopy, was too afraid. My grandfather was in his sixties when diagnosed, he had to have a colostomy, but lived for 20 years after that.
I agree, it should be 40 now and it doesn't help that there is so much crap in our food today either.

Both of my parents have had skin cancer, the least worrisome kind, so that is something on my list to do next. That is another screening that people tend to think you don't need to do until later in life, but I think the average age people are first discovered to have skin cancer is between 50 and 55.

| Re: When to get colonoscopy?
Well, I had my first colonoscopy on Friday the 3rd and everything went well, the colonoscopy was a breeze! They did find a couple of hyperplastic polyps in the rectum area, doctor says they are not pre-cancerous, but still had to send it out for biopsy, once that comes back, they will let me know how often I need to have colonoscopies.
I think this was the single most important test I have had and there was nothing to it, the prep isn't fun, but doable! I was able to drink all but 16 oz of the gatorade prep and I was cleaned out well for the test. The hardest part for me was the part where you can't eat lol. Good luck to everyone on their tests and for those of you that are hesitant, do it! It's easy peezy!

Congrats Penzfan! You have joined the ranks of the Colonoscopy club!
I agree with you...this is such a simple test and avoiding it because one is afraid is so sad....preventing colon cancer is so easy; its just a matter of having your first one and realizing there is nothing to it.
As a TMI/ FYI- I also had a mamogram this week. Truthfully, the colonoscopy is easier! Even though I knew what to expect with both tests, I honestly think one has to be a contortionist to get a mamogram and the new digital ones that they do have even more films/ positions to get! Id rather sleep through my tests!!!
Congrats again!

Thank you! It definitely is an easy test, one not to fear. LOL about the mammogram, I'm due for my next on in June a 3D one, I'm guessing I will be in more positions with that one lol. I'm right there with you, I'd rather sleep through them for sure!
