Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

ok.. Ive read quite a few messages on here and hope im in the right place. I live In Australia, 42yo, female.

For the past 2 months I have had terrible stomach pains when having a bowel movement. 3 days ago I had a colonscopy but it was unsuccessful as the doctor could only get up 20cm before being blocked. I then went for an urgent CAT scan where it has been confirmed I have Bowel Cancer.

I go back to the specialist on Tuesday the 9th Feb to find out about the dignosis, treatment etc.

Im presuming that I will more than likely need surgery, and then Im not sure if Chemo is an option too.

Was just wondering if anyone has some info for me, some encouragment, good vibes, experience, etc.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thankyou

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

SO sorry to hear this! did you have any other symptoms? i'm having a colonoscopy on Monday becuase i have ulcerative proctitis and it, or something else, is causing me to have stomach pains off and on for the month of january. i've been bloated more than normal and not as regular as i usually am alogn with mucous...all classic signs of a flare but i hope that's it. are your pains ONLY when having a BM? have you had a fever? didn't you have a prep to clean you out for the test or was the blockage due to a tumor as opposed to not being cleaned out?

on the bright side....at least it was probably caught early....there's alot they can do and the cure rate is so high if caught early! keep me posted. i'll be thinking of you.

wish ME luck on Monday.

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

Hi Boxgirl...
for starters, Best of luck for Monday !
Yes I was cleaned out, had to drink that horrible horrible solution, etc etc. No the blockage was a cancer of some sort.
Orignally it came aware because of haemoroids, but then other symptons came to hand for sure.. general malaise, irregular bm, mucous, but more so the increasing pain daily. The past week or so I am having lower back pain alot too
Im hoping they have caught this early for sure.

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

Mazrose, So sorry about your diagnosis. Keep your chin up though...know many in our community that are colon cancer survivors! There is another section on this board that you may be interest in: Cancer: Colon & Rectal. Will keep you in my prayers. Cathy

P.S. Don't fret if you need a colostomy...husband has one because of colon surgery due to diverticulitis....it's a piece of cake in the grand scheme of things!

Hi Cathy..
Thanks for the other section on this board. I will defiantely be checking that out. I have just read about 12 pages of "Post Resection - what to expect" and loved it.. Resect man you are a gem!! and ispiration. Im not sure of what my details are yet, will know more Tuesday as to the expanse and treatment but I am soooooo glad I found this board.
I am Worried about the colostomy bag for sure, and cant seem to get my head around that a person could live a normal life with one.. I need to read more stories.

Thanks for the well wishes.
Maz

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

Hi all.. I have gone to the Cancer side of this board, but it may not be cancer yet.. I will post the same message as I did there for you all too.OK, as I understand it.... it might not be Cancer !! though he is treating as cancer of the sigmoid colon. Apparently it is a large mass, and it has to come out either way. They are going to be taking 1/2 of my left side of my bowel out on the 18th Feb. I will be in hospital for 7-10 days with a further re- coup time at home of 8 weeks. When they get the mass (possible infection) out, they will take it for biopsy then and may still have to treat it with chemo after that date. I will have a temporary colostomy (bag) while the colon is healing together where they join it. It is a big operation and will leave a big scar (there goes the bikinis )..
They will be worried about infection as this can be quite dangerous if this occurs. Also if my spleen gets in the way of the op, they may have to take that out too ! (hmmm more wieght loss The op will take about 5 hrs, all going to plan..
For the procedure to occur I once again have to have "fleet" bloody horrible pure salt drink
They call the procdure a haemocolectomy of the left hand side.

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

I cant help you with the sex part, but i can give you some advice for your girlfriend. If your gilfriend is feeling sick from the cancer.Let her know that there are natural things out there that will protect her immune system from cancer.Vegatables and fruits have vitamins and powerful antioxidents that will boost her immune system. It will protect her body from infection, cranberry juice or blueberries will clean out her colon.Tea,well green tea is also good for the colon.Dark green vegtables especially brocoli and other dark vegtables will help protect her system.

Don't worry, clampett, you are not doomed to spanking the monkey from now on.

The bag situation has gotten very sophisticated these days (like everything else medical). Most people will learn about their "rhythm" and can spend part of the day with a cap on the stoma rather than a bag (especially for particular activities like swimming . . . and other things ).

My brother-in-law ended up with a bag a couple of years ago (because of cancer also - no symptoms either). The nurse who handled people "orientation" to their new situation was great . . . had a bag herself. I hope your girlfriends' hospital/doctor has something similar. I think it can make all the difference.

Good luck!

I just came across this and wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

I agree that having a bag is a lot easier than it used to be in the old days when aparently people had to wear all sorts of dreadful contraptions.

Please keep in mind that the use of a cap is only suitable for those with a Colostomy and not an Ileostomy. I have the latter due to 25 years of Ulcerative colitis.

On saying that, wearing a bag doesnt mean giving up sex. once a person has recovered enough physicaly from the surgery then there shouldnt be any reason why they cant have an active sex life even if they do wear a bag.Unless they have other health problems of course.

Clampett, If its an Ileostomy that she has there are smaller bags that she can use if she realy doesnt want to wear her reguler one during sex. That goes for a colostomy too if the person with the bag cant use a cap for any reason.

If your girlfriend is feeling self conscience she could wear one of those tube tops around her waist to keep the bag secure. There are also companys out there that sell great sexy underwear made especialy for us ostomates. You can even purchase underwear with the crotch removed but the underwear has a special pocket sewn into the front to keep the bag secure.

Does your girlfriend have a stoma nurse that she can call on to ask for advice. If not I realy suggest that she finds one.

Where there is a will there is a way

I would give you a link to the company that I have used to buy underwear but I dont think I am alowed to post it here, anyone know?

Ps, I would like to also say that I hope that everything worked out ok for you mazrose.

Re: Just diagnosed with Bowel Cancer

Hi everyone who replied.
It is a Ileostomy bag that she has.
We have had the sex discussions, re what is going on down there,as it is not happening. i tell her to be patient and tell horny hubby to use his hands!
To everyone who has just been diagnosed witn bowel cancer, my friend is only 39,she had no real symptoms.
i was with her when she got her results of the colonoscopy, and we could not believe the news.
It was domm and gloom for a few weeks, but now the light at the end of the tunnel is very bright.
i wish everone well.
thanks.
