How long before you were diagnosed?

After 4 years of pain I have finally been referred for a colonoscopy after my cousin was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. I suppose I am worried but I have had pain for such a long time that I have learned to live with it. I hope it doesn't offend anyone who has cancer or polyps if I ask how long you were in pain or suffered symptoms before you were diagnosed.
Thank you.

Stedwell:
No offense at all. My idiot Internal Med doctor kept telling me it was hemmorhoids, stress, and the Advil I was taking when I began complaining of rectal bleeding at 28 years old.

It wasn't until 3 years later that I was finally diagnosed, Stage 3C Rectal Cancer. It would have been detected and treated much differently had I been referred when I first complained, or on subsequent visits when I complained more. I guess I was stupid and trusted someone who was supposed to be caring for my health.

Anyway, I know you are worried. However, there is NOTHING you can do to turn back the hands of time. What's done is done. You don't and won't know anything until a colonoscopy is performed. In the mean time, easier said than done, but try not to worry... it's not good for your emotional or physical well-being. IF it is something, you can deal with it later. Try to do some fun things in the mean time to take your mind off the "what if's." We will be right here to help you in the event of this... if not, we're here for that too, and like happy stories sometimes! Please drop us a message and let us know once you have had a colonoscopy. Which, by the way is NOTHING. They give you drugs that puts you in and out of sleep. One of the drugs makes you forget a little... If you want, you can be put out to sleep even deeper, or if you like watching the monitor, you can stay semi to completely awake... your choice.

Again, PLEASE come back and keep us posted. It could be lots of things, but it is definitely time for that colonoscopy. BTW any additional symptoms... bleeding, increased frequency, thin stools?

Regards,
CancerDad

Hi Stedwell. I am one of the luckier ones here. I went to the doctors with bleeding, and he thought it was haemoroids but wanted to check and make sure so sent me to a specialist where I underwent the colonoscopy and found out I had Stage 2+ (perforated) within 2 months of the initial consultation. Like CD has said tho, theres no time for looking back.. Just get the coloncoscopy done now and take it from there.
Goodluck and take time for you.

Re: How long before you were diagnosed?

After four years of pain, I would have thought you would have developed other symptoms before now.

My husband was dx six months after he started feeling nauseous and going to the bathroom more often. We put it down to some blood pressure medications he started. However, he should have had a colonoscopy sooner...his fault as much as his doctor's. If he had not waited so long, he would have not had Stage 111c with 11 out of 18 positive lymph nodes.

Good luck with the colonoscopy....there are other possible reasons for your pain and the colonoscopy can identify those too. Let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for your replies. They were exactly what I needed to hear. I think my colonoscopy is still someway off (NHS!!) so I need to keep a level head. I do have increased trips to the loo and looser stools. (Very occasionally thin) but no visible blood though I have never had a stool tests. i will let you know of the results although as I said I think they may be some time off yet! :)
