UItrasound results - worried

I found a lump last week and went to my PCP. She said it felt like a cyst and sent me to have a mammogram and ultrasound done. Ultrasound results came back today. They want to do an ultrasound guided needle biopsy and aspirate the cyst. They said they said they saw "solid nodule" something....

I am terrified....does that mean I have a cyst and solid lump (that could be cancerous)>??

I am 32 w/no family history of breast cancer.

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Hi; lots of people do get cysts and often the radiologists want to biopsy. Just in case. It's good that you're checking it out, either way. Did you only really notice this lump recently - or have you just not checked before?

Some 10 years ago (~30yo) I noticed a little irritation when I shaved my underarms; like a small soreness. On feeling more with my fingers, I found a nice lump - about the very edge of my breast just starting up to my underarm. It hurts to press it and sometimes causes spontaneous pain around the area.

I was a little concerned but did nothing about it. I figured "young, no history of cancers at all (at the time), and mom gets lots of cysts". I may have asked about it at my next doc appt but didn't do much. No ma-mmo or anything. I should have done something, but here I am.

So, some 5 years later when I get a new gyno I tell her about that apparent cyst and that if it was cancer, it'd kill me by now. She agreed but sent me for screening (not diagnostic). While there the radiologist was alarmed and had me go for US and then convinced my gyno to send me for biopsy. I was rather annoyed at the whole thing! LOL But I did it and sure enough it was just a hard cyst.

Good luck to you!

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Ok, so I have a little bit more info on my US. They found 3 little nodules (that are little cysts I guess) they want to aspirate.

They also found a solid cyst which they want to do a biopsy on. Are solid cysts almost always cancerous?

I found the lump rather randomly (it was right before my period)..it may have been there before, I dont know...and now I am sore on that breast.

I am getting married in 3 months and I am really scared.

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Hi! I just want to tell you of my recent experience. I had needle biopsies of 2 complex cysts under the ultrasound which showed abnormal cells. I then had to have surgical biopsies of the areas. While they were doing a wire localization for the operation, they found a total of 7 seven complex cysts! I had them all removed under general anesthesia one month ago-----ALL WERE BENIGN!!
Hope yours turns out to be the same!! Good luck!

Re: UItrasound results - worried

I haven't quite figured out what is "good" or "bad" in this breast world. I literally only just found out that a highly suspicious lump (I didn't know it was there) is OK, and doing searches on that early report (as well as with my sister's BC), it's inconsistent as to what seems riskier.

My own old cyst is "hard" and "solid", for sure. I think my just-biopsied is soft yet "solid", so it seems to me it's a toss-up.

Good luck to you - report back to us.

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Hi Worried, i wish you good luck in what ever the outcome is. I just thought i would let you know i am right there with you going through exactly the same thing. I have a sore boob, only on one side and sometimes it itches, i told my dr who sent me to the breast clinic at the hospital just to be on the safe side, once there, the dr felt my breasts and said they were fine, no lumps etc, but again just to be on the safe side gave me a mamgram there and then. I was told i would get the results in 3 weeks. Last Saturday i got 2 letters in the post, one saying come in for a mamogram and one for an ultrasound on my boob, i thought they had made a mistake as i had already had my mamogram.
I got to the hospital to be told they had found a lump, but not in the sore boob, in the good one! I had another mamogram and the lump was definitely there, so i went in another room and they did an ultra sound and told me the lump was not a cyst. They then suddenly sprang on me there were going to do 3 deep biopsys there and then, i was so frightened, but they numbed me, which stung but i didn't feel anything else. The were 3 sort of punches in my chest which shook me a bit but i never felt a thing.
This was only yesterday and i have not got to wait till next Wednesday 23rd March to find out if i have cancer or not. This will be the longest wait in all my life.
I just thought i would let you know i'm going though the same, i hope this might be of some comfort to you. Good luck, Caz

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Good luck to you also, do you know when your having the tests done! Mine was not the needle aspiration, i had the 'core biopsy' and i freaked at having it suddenly put on my that they needed to do it there and then, but really that was the best way so i couldn't back out lol.
when the dr said to me the instrument sounds like a staple gun, i though s-it, i could feel my heart racing and started getting palpitations, but apart from about 4 stings of the aneastetic, i didnt feel anything at all, she did say i might feel tugging but i didn't even get that, i'm so grateful it wasn't a bad experience, as they did say if they accidently took normal breast tissue by mistake i would have to go and have these biopsy's done agoin : - 0

She did say my lump is certainly not a cyst, but until i get these results in a few days i won't know what it is, fingers crossed it's just fibrous tissue.

Let me know how you get on,

Caz.

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Mine is on the 28th. They are calling the one they are going to biopsy a solid cyst.
Please let me know how yours turns out. I think I'm shedding hair from the stress and finding imaginary symptoms like swollen lymph nodes etc

Re: UItrasound results - worried

I wouldnt know what a lymph node felt like but i am trying to steer clear of feeling for anything on my chest/armpit area as i am an anxious person and i would probably imagine ive found something. The one thing that has come back to me that the consultant said whilst i was having the biopsy was she told me my lymph nodes looked ok, but just before i left she then told me my lump was called a 'U3' which means and unidentified lump, and then she added that my lymph nodes were a 'U3'??? I have only just picked up on this, how can my lymph nodes be a U3 when she told me they were fine, this is a bit worrying for me.
Today i have woke up and i feel so dreadfully ill, i have gone down with the dreaded flu, but my chest is hurting, i can tell i have a chest infection coming as it feels like a have a ton weight sitting on my chest and i am not breathing properly, its sort of laboured and wheezy, i have had this before and it can knock me off my feet. I have mild heart disease and when i get a chest infection it can leave me practically unable to walk due to shortness of breath, and this feels like that is what ive got coming, plus the sore throat, constant runny nose, headache etc etc. I could really do without this at the moment for obvious reasons. I also seem to have this strange sort of 'nesting instinct' lol, i'm 46 and defo not pregnant, but i feel the need to tidy my whole house and get it in order before Wednesday in case i got told bad news. I started tidying yesterday and was going to spend the weekend blitzing my whole house, but now i feel to flaming ill to do anything, just walking is leaving me a bit breathless. It's sods law this happpens to me at this important time in my life. I hope i don't get to much worse as no matter how ill i am i am still going to the hospital Wednesday for my results, nothing is going to stop me. Good luck, Caz.

Caz, I don't want to alarm you, but I'd advise you push on the "sore breast" issue. There are many things that can cause sore and itchy breasts, and I don't know the precise nature of your hurts, but I'm a bit cautious now because of my sister's case.

She has the RARE kind of breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), that often involves soreness and/or itchiness. Since it is rare and does not usually involve the famous "lumps", doctors often don't even think of it. They send for a ma-mmo but that nor US are ever likely to find it. Mostly it needs a certain biopsy, although sometimes an MRI can help find it (that was OK for my sister). My sister was put off by a few gynos and others for a few months before being diagnosed. They said it was just infection, etc. Not only is IBC rare, but it is much more aggressive than standard BC. She was Stage III when someone finally pinned it down (typical for this rare and ignored cancer), and is Stage IV now.

This is why I was so scared recently, because I had some soreness. I'm still wary of the results (I did have a lump - unbeknownst to me) because there was a lump and for all I know, they only biopsied the lump but may need to biopsy general tissue for IBC. At least I tried to insist to my doctor that I needed to be looked at special because of my sister and her rarer condition.

Please make sure you mention IBC to doctors and tell them you know it's rare and it can't be found easily with standard imaging, and mimics many infectious problems with the hurting and itchiness. It may be worth it.

Re: UItrasound results - worried

Thank you for your message o;line, when i see this consultant next week i am going to repeat again that my left breast is still sore, if they do diagnose cancer, i am going to ask them to ct scan my whole body, i know they won't do this as they are to mean to spend the money here in the uk. They never do a whole ct scan on anyone, but what worries me is i am waiting go have a biopsy done down below because of something called lichen sclerosis, its like a thicken on the vulva, and its so terribly itchy and sore but it keeps coming back, so i would like that looked into further, and i have had a bad lower leg for over 3 years, they could not find anything wrong with it apart from a fluid filled area, possibly a cyst, but this bad leg/ankle just suddenly gave way recently and my ankle snapped completely in to two halves for no reason, i had to have metal plate nand pins put in etc etc, even the hospital said this was so unusual. I would like it all looked into.
The more i look up breast cancer on the web the more it sounds like me, so i[m probably just scaring my self, but i have seen a picture of a mamogram and the lump on it looked identicle to mine, the same size, bright white with ragged edges and this mamogram was showing a picture of a cancerous lump. I know im starting to get a bit panicky as my date get nearer for my results. I currently feel awful as i have a bit of flu, but i have got a chest infection as well, my chest feels like sandpaper and my breathing is real bad, so this is also making me feel sorry for myself. Hopefully i will be ok by Wednesday.

I am so sorry for all your problems! I know what you mean about suffering multiple things. I have several chronic conditions that can't truly be fixed - some I hope will indeed gradually get better. This fear of BC is on top of it all.

I said I am still wary of (I)BC for myself. I figure unless something new pops up, I will simply wait until my annual with the same gyno in May; it's only a couple months. When I go back I will push about whether my particular biopsy would see IBC as well. Only then will I really be all satisfied. And I'll see if I can go to a new "breast specialist", as my new general practitioner advised I go to from now on because there's so much weirdness in both my breasts now on ma-mmo alone.
