Confused on CINIII/CIS??? - Cancer: Breast Message Board

OK, I've read that CIN3 and carcinoma in situ are sometimes lumped together. But Liz's post got me thinking. My doc says the lab she sent my colpo biopsies to does lump them together but I guess I'm wondering if the biopsies would have shown if I had invasive cancer or do I have to wait and see what the cone biopsy says. In other words, could I be getting even more bad news?

It's getting confusing, isn't it? I believe CIS is only at the surface of the cervix and that the cone will tell you if it goes deeper. Either way, the biopsy can't tell you if it is invasive. The choice of the cone for this kind of biopsy result is so that you can tell for sure if the margins are clear or not. With the LEEP, you can only tell up to the margins and that leaves a small space where you can't tell for sure what is going on because the tissue is electrically burned. With the kinfe, things aren't burned.

I guess, it is possible that the cone could give you more bad news, but we can cross everything for you, too, until you know for sure.

Oh Hon, I really didn't mean to scare you. I know I've been in your shoes, and it was scary enough. However, what exactly did your results show from your colpo.
My GYN said that she could actually see where my cervix was raw in the 12 o'clock position on just a regular pelvic exam.
I've got you in my prayers. Like I posted earlier, I think this is just some freak thing that has happened to me. I think I had some pretty crappy doctors in the past who didn't even know how to take a pap (I was at a military training base prior to this). I hate it when people tell me to settle down and down worry and to take it easy, so I'm not going to tell it to you! However, I will be sending hugs and prayers your way! Let us know how things turn out for you hon!

Thanks for your replies...here's another question...if the cone is being performed using a laser, not a knife won't that be the same as if I had gotten a LEEP as far as burning tissue and questionable as far as margins? Ugh...what a pain!

Willow had the LEEP. She's been struggling with quitting smoking lately, but I'm sure she'll be back. Until then, you can search this section for her name - she started her own posts and then there was one to her that was from another girl having the laser done. I believe the laser is more exact. They can use it to take out specific sections instead of a cone.

Go back to the first page of Cancer: Breast, Cervical, and Ovarian and there is a search option at the bottom. That may help you for now.
