Pain under arms

Hi folks, I've been having pain under my arms (mostly right) that sometimes radiates to my breast...for a week or two. It feels like it's running down my arm. My right shoulder is killing me as well. Before that the pain was up under my neck and chin. I've seen three dr.s and no one can feel any lumps. My bloodwork has come back fine. I'm grasping at straws here... what the heck is going on.

They are hesitant to call it Fibromalygia(sp?).

I was put on Zoloft because of my vast array of symptoms and anxiety that was coming from it. Could this med be doing this?

Your thoughts are so very much needed.

I just had a mammogram and thank god everything is clear. But the pain is still there. Tuesday I have an appt. with a neurologist...we will see what he says. I am about to start my period, so maybe it is just hormones. It's never happened in the past. Damn aging! : )

Re: Pain under arms

My mom had the same thing. She was so scared. She went to many doctors and they couldn't find anything wrong. Finally she went to another doctor and they told her that it was an inflamed nerve. I think she took some anti-inflammatory medication or something like that. (I will call her tonight when she gets home from work to find out what they did) and she is fine now.

Re: Pain under arms

The neurologist thinks I have some trigger point pain in my neck and back that are referring pain to my ears...so he treated that with trigger point therapy (big needle!) and physical therapy, stretching etc for my back and neck. He also changed my antidepressant to Elavil, saying that healing comes with a good nights sleep. I've been on Elavil for 2 months and I can honestly say that I don't remember dreaming until now. After my little boy was born, 3 years ago, I really don't think I had a full night sleep. I would wake up 3 or 4 times a night and just lay there. It would also take me hours to get sleep. Elavil has been great for me.

As far as the pain under my arms...it's gone. However, right before my period this month I could feel some minor pain under arms. Felt like lymph nodes but couldn't feel any lumps etc. After my annual gyno appt. I mentioned this to him and asked if it could all be hormonal and he said yes.

Having said all this. I believe my aches and pains were from a mixed bag of things. Stress, lack of sleep, carrying a 10 lb brief case around, worry, anxiety...we will see how things work out. Has anyone else taken Elavil (I believe I'm spelling it right?)

Say, what I do not understand is this: Having pain under the arms which I also have now and it runs into the brest and at time causes a burning in the breast mostly my left .I also ranned to the doctor to get it checked fearing cancer. The doctor assured me it was not cancer. But he also added due to my brain stem and nervous system that I may need to rest more often.Plus there is many other reasons , but none of this is a cause for some one to say you need medication for depression. THINK ABOUT IT. LOOK the pain is real is it not?

Re: Pain under arms

Hi All,

I have had what you are all describing for just under a year on and off.
Pain under my left arm around the area the side of my bra would sit, this would radiate into my breast and feel sore like before a period or similar. Sometimes my shoulder aches and sometimes my whole breast can ache. Also the it feels very glandular there and sometimes swollen, oftne worse as I have been poing and kneeding looking for any significant lumps. However I should point out I am over weight plus I have very large boobs.
I would not describe it as acute pain, more of a nagging and sometimes sore feeling.

I was sick with worry at first thinking possible cancer of the breast but was somewhat relived to read breast cancer in the first instance does not necessary come with pain, although I know it can do.

MY GP refferred me to the Breast Clinic where I was examined and a history taken. The Dr advised the likely cause of my breast pain is a mxture of two things.

I think I damamged the muscles under my arms around the rib cage (intercostals) when lifting heavy tables last year and holding them at a funny angle, this combined with hormonal breast pain and the weight of my breasts adds up to a horrible nagging pain that sometimes goes away and like this month has come back after being pain free for quite a few weeks.

I found anti inflammatories ( Diclofenic or ibuprofen) worked well along with an Ice pack or a heat pack ( hot water bottle helped). Also some gentle stretching of the arms neck and shoulders does help.

I find the more I stress over the pain the worse it gets so maybe some psychological issues as well, as this all started when a friend of mine was diagnosed with breast Cancer last year. I noticed it flared up again when my partners mother was diagnosed in early January 2007.

I hope some of you find answers and help to aleviate the pain you are in.
