Neighbor having double masectomy - what can I do for her? - Cancer: Breast Message Board

My neighbor is having a double masectomy on April 23. What can I do for her other than taking over food? Is there anything that would be useful in her recovery?

She has a very good attititude - even though the first dr. she went to told her there was nothing to worry about she went for a second opinion and they found cancer in both breasts. Turns out that there was calcification back in 2002 and the radiologist didnt catch it. She is suing him. She is relieved that they are doing the masectomy - she asked for it from the beginning. I just feel so bad for her because her best friend died from breast cancer and she has been very active in different cancer charities so she is well aware of the difficult path ahead of her.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

Hello..how thoughtful of you to be thinking of your neighbour. My cousin had a diferent type of cancer, she said the nicest thing sthat people did for her was to do her errands, clean her house, do her gardening, groceries, be there to talk if needed, offer to drive her to appts., there are a lot of things you can do which may seem small to you although to a person in need they are huge & not forgotten!!

Well, you could definitely run errands for her. She won't feel up to driving for quite awhile. Also offer to accompany her to her appointments. If she needs radiation, she will be going every day, and it is nice to have company along with you. But most of all, just keep letting her know that you care about how she is doing...don't stop doing that. She is fortunate to have a neighbor like you.
