Lumps in breast... - Cancer: Breast Message Board

I will be 23 years old in a few months, and I recently found painful lumps in my breasts. After some encouragement from my mother, I went to my physician. She told me that the lumps were probably a result of fibrocystic changes in my breast. She also said that the lumps could be more tender and prominent during menstration. She said she did not believe I needed a mammogram because I am so young. Initially, I was relieved, but the lumps have continued to be prominent and painful even when I am not menstrating. I have a history of cancer in my family, and my grandmother on my mother's side actually had breast cancer. My question to all of you is: Should I accept the diagnosis from my physician, or should I obtain a second opinion? I don't want to go looking for something to be wrong with me, but I would like definitive proof that I truly am alright. I would be grateful for any advice you might have. Thanks!

I am almost the same age as you - I too will be 23 in a few months. Just to reassure you I get lumps in my breasts as well - mine have been confirmed as cysts by my doctor.

I would, however, strongly advise you get a second opinion. I had a very good friend of my own age who did get breast cancer. Fortunately, it was discovered early so she is now clear of it.

I advise you get a mammogram as soon as possible.

A second opinion is never a bad idea. However, I also have had problems with fibrocycstic breasts and even ended up with a breast biopsy last year.

I decided not to do THAT again, so after lots of research am now taking a magnesium/calcium supplement daily, along with a B vitamin and Vitamin E. They have made a major difference. My breasts are softer, and while I still get cysts before my period, they are smaller and much less painful (now "annoying" instead of "painful").

And this year, for the first time ever, I didn't have to go back for followup tests after my mammogram. I just got a "come back next year" letter. It was wonderful.

I don't know if this is in every state or in my state, but I started asking for a mamogram at age 29. The hospital told me I could not walk in and get one without a dr. opinion untill I was 32. I could not get my M.D. Or obgyn to make an appointment for me, they both told me I was too young. I had to fly to the state of Maine, to my sisters doctor to get a mamogram!!! Thank God all was well. My oldest sister Kathy has has a masectomy in her mid 30's. My sister Rhonda died of cancer on her 32nd birthday. I really wanted to be cautious. I now get my regular mamogram every year, and do self exam. If your doctor tells you, you are too young find another doctor! Cancer has no age limit!! Be strong and don't let any doctor or any person intimidate you or make you doubt yourself!
