Question Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

hello, Do any of you know anyone that has developed breast cancer from smoking cigarettes? I know that smoking poses a major health threat in general and is a risk factor for cervical cancer but what about breast cancer? Anyone? Thanks.

Re: Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

No....ironically enough everyone that i've known who has had breast cancer..my mother in law included (which she had twice and had both breasts removed) has never smoked a day in their life. However...you don't have to put a cigarette in your mouth to get the effects of being a smoker. Especially with so many inconsiderate smokers around

Re: Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

When I was first diagnosed with B.C. my surgeon implied that my smoking caused my cancer. I was devastated to hear that on top of him telling me I had cancer. I now just don't believe that smoking has anything to do with getting breast cancer--too many women who never smoked get it.

Re: Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

You're right. Your surgeon can imply that but there are no conclusive studies that prove smoking is linked to breast cancer.

Re: Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

I don't think that we can ever actually pinpoint one particular thing that 'causes' any type of cancer..there are so many things that could contribute that we never know that we even have contact with. However...smoking...is an obvious contributor as well as something that is preventible. I'm sure what your doctor was referring to as your smoking 'causing' your cancer is the fact that smoking inhibits the body and cells to do what it does naturally which is fight off disease and infection because of the toxins in the cigarretes and the effects on the oxygen levels that the cells are able to get.
So I think for someone to think that their smoking had 'nothing' to do with their cancer forming is naive or possibly in denial that their addiction contributed to their condition.

Re: Does smoking cigarettes cause breast cancer?

Housemouse - Smoking did not cause your breast cancer and did not contribute to it. There is absolutely no valid medical prove otherwise. I am dead against smoking because I do know what it CAN cause a person to go through and how it contributes to other disease processes. However, breast cancer isn't one of them. You aren't naive or uninformed or anything else. That's a fact.
