Found a lump last night- need some advice - Cancer: Breast Message Board

Hello to the board,

I just recently found this message board and I wonder if someone could give me some advice. Last night, I found a hard, pea-sized lump in my armpit- actually, slightly larger than pea-sized. I checked again this morning and it's still there, and after touching it, now the side of my breast is feeling sore. I'm a week off from my period starting, and have had general aching in my breasts when I'm premenstrual, but this didn't start to feel sore until after I had manipulated this lump with my fingers. Does this sound like something I should make an appt with my doctor over? Or should I wait till after my period comes and goes and see if it's still there?

Hi,
Sounds like a lymph node. Have you had a cold or anything like that recently? It is probably nothing but I would watch it for a week or so and then get it checked out for peace of mind.

No, I haven't had a cold or been sick at all in months. I'm trying not to think too much about it, but I will probably go ahead and let a doctor check it out soon- thanks for replying!

Definitely keep a close eye on it until after your period. It may be a cyst filling up with fluid that will go down after your period. Also examine how it feels. Is it totally hard, or sort of rubbery. Does it move when you manipulate it or is it firmly attached. Benign lumps are usually more tender, softer, and move around under the skin more. But if it doesn't go away get it checked out and get a sonogram/mammogram.

Hi Aims - I just noticed your post and wondered if your period has come yet, or the lumpy feeling gone away?

Reason I ask is that I also thought I felt a lump in my left armpit last night and I'm two days away from my period. I have fairly large breasts and both my grandmothers had breast cancer so I'm not sure if I'm being overly paranoid right now or if it's something I should see the doc about.

How old are you, if you dont mind me asking? Is there a history of breast cancer in your family?

I'm 35 and currently trying for a baby, so feeling pretty scared right now.
