my mother has had bilateral breast removal left breast 9 years ago rt breast will be 5 years in april she was almost home free when 2 months ago so started complaining about this pain over her rt back rib well they after 2 months finally did a cat scan now the results metastatic bone cancer she is 80 i just dont know what to expect she will get a referral to an oncologist . my mom is 80

I don't know what will be offered, however, if you aren't happy with the decision, ask for a referral to an oncologist yourself!

My mother had bone metastasis from breast cancer, but when she was diagnosed, she was only 55. I have heard that age & fraility do make a difference in what treatment you will receive (it did as my mother aged with the disease) but the oncologist should still see her!

thanks so much for your response wit h her insurance i cant just choose my own oncologist she is on a medicare hmo so i have to go with the program however if i am not happy then i tell the pcp and he can change to another oncologist at this point mom is already frail as she has been for a few years she says she il not take chemo or radiation therapy so i guess we will see what can be offerred at least for comfort . id your mom still alive ? did u have hospice

No, my mother passed away on January 7th of 2005. She had two major medical plans--Blue Cross and Blue Shield--however, neither covered hospice either.

When I went back for Christmas (I live in London, she lives in California) last year with my husband, she was loopy...losing control of her body functions, unable to walk, unable to communicate, etc...We took her to the emergency room on the 26th of December where they found tumors on her brain and gave her 10 days.

She lived exactly that, in the hospital cancer ward. She was incredibly happy there (the few days she was cognascent) and her doctors were more than happy to keep her there in lieu of taking her home (which was not an option).

In hindsight, it was a blessed passing.
