Where do I go? - Cancer: Breast Message Board

Hello, I have what might be a silly question, but I'm going through this for the first time.
I'm 26, and I have been feeling some masses or lumps in my breasts. They sometimes feel more pronounced than other times, and I'm not sure if it's something to be worried about or not. I also get a tightness sometimes, or a bit of pressure around my breast, but again, I'm not sure if it's hormones (like if my period is on it's way, or just other natural occurences) or something else. I want to have it checked out, just to be safe, even though I'm so scared.
My question is this: what type of doctor should I go to right now? My husband suggested I go to my GP to get their thoughts, and if they think it's something that needs to be looked at more closely, they would recommend a specialist for me. I'm not sure if this is the way to go, or if I should go directly to an OB/GYN. I've never been to an OB before, and I'm scared of my first time in general, much less over something like this! Any advice/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

please do not feel silly for asking these question i was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago and i understand the fear that you feel. from my experience all i can truelly say to you is please follow it up, if you are not happy with want they say find another doctor. i donot want to alarm you ,
you know your body better than they do if things donot feel right follow it through. follow your gut feelings they are always right. I know, because my gut feeling saved my life.

When I found a lump in my breast I went to my regular physician. My physician evaluated my situation and sent me in the proper direction.

Going to your regular physician allows you to talk with a familiar person who can schedule any needed appointments with specialists. Your doctor will know best about where to point you.

If he doesn't suggest an exam by a specialist, make an appointment with a gynecologist or call for information at the nearest comprehensive breast center. You won't have a problem finding one. Just check the phone book or the net. But your doctor will likely take care of all that for you. Mine did.
